I would. I heard the backhoe going up and down the street this morning, it's clearly never had any part of the track system lubricated at all. The most horrible metal on metal sound you've never heard. A company like that wouldn't care enough to put cameras in their machines, even if such a thing existed.

Although interestingly enough while I was snooping around the massive backhoe, there was a sound of some fan running in the engine compartment close to the cab. Makes me wonder what it is.

What track system on a backhoe would you hear while it is going up and down the street? The only 'track' I can think of is the Backhoe slide. But that is rarely moved, and if it is then it is moved once and stays there for some time.

If the keys are left in the vehicle there is a chance the key is not turned to the full off position. This will leave the accessories running, such as the HVAC fan.

I wouldn't 'mess' with a piece of construction equipment. Would you like it if someone you did not know messed with your automobile?

Im guessing he's talking about an excavator.

As opposed to a backhoe:

LOL...To most people, yes.

Trust me, you don't want to go on a job site and tell an excavator operator that he's running a backhoe.

No, not the same function and definitely not the same thing. Most excavators are bigger, heavier, and better at digging and lifting than a backhoe. A backhoe is better when you need pneumatic wheels to not tear up grass or pavement like the steel tracks of an excavator will, but they have a much more limited capacity. Backhoes are often used by small utility crews as a jack of all trades, master of none type of machinery.

Best advice: leave their stuff alone. Period. Seriously.

Agreed. Don't mess with another persons livelihood even if you think it is funny to play jokes on them. If they are friends that is one thing but otherwise get your inner child under control and leave their equipment alone.

I can tell you when I worked in the construction field if you had messed with the equipment, tools, etc... you would have found yourself having to hire some new people. If you had messed with Rocky's( the guy who did excavating on most of the jobs where I worked on the new houses )equipment you might end up missing a few teeth as well.

I am not being a stick in the mud either just pointing out this is a horrible idea.

So you're ok with the construction workers having a little fun with your 2012 Impreza while it's parked overnight, right?
Or would you prefer they just leave it alone?

Also a good idea...

Not saying it was smart but we borrowed a D6 dozer from a logging site once. Middle of winter 30 miles from town and the phones didn't work, we ended up in the ditch around midnight.

We knew the owner of the equipment and left a $20 in the cab, guy probably didn't mind the warm cab a few hours later.

Now that is hilarious. This kind of innocent thing is PROBABLY OK.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to do anything mean, just something funny that the workers would have a laugh at.

The other end of that is, say you did something completely harmless and happen to be spotted by a neighbor, and later on someone else comes along and does some damage only no one sees them. PD gets called, and one of the neighbors says that he saw you over by the equipment. How do you prove it *wasn't* you?

Best bet is to stay away.

Maybe slap a greenpeace sticker on the back of one, Hillary 2016? Or if the excavator has a grapple, put an empty beer bottle with an egg standing up in the mouth, maybe the guy will try to pick it up, or just mash it into the ground...
The guys in our shop sometimes play tricks on each other, there was a CPR mannequin floating around for a while that they put in the back of a van, peering through cargo wall which gave a few guys jolt in the morning.

The excavator creaks all night long at places along the arm, I don't trust it to not suddenly collapse on me.

Hillary 2016 sticker..now the operator can park in the handicap space. I'd rather it be Stephan Harber 2016...too bad he is a Leafs fan and not a Habs fan like me
