K&N Filter

I changed the oil on my 2003 Mitsu Montero the yesterday. The car has 18586 miles, the filter has about 6500miles with Mobil 1 5W30. The filter has been installed for 6 months. It had a K&N 1004 filter. I cut it up using a regular can opener. Although the can opener will not open cans anymore. I have never paid such close attention to changing my oil before. I found a couple things;

1. My filter is mounted vertically.
2. When I unscrewed it about 3-4 oz of oil leaked out from the engine as I removed it.(My interpretation of this is that the filter was keeping oil in the engine passages. So the ADBV was necessary even though the filter was mounted vertically.
3. The filter was full of oil. By sticking a screwdriver in one of the holes on the base, I drained out the oil.
4. The filter was six months old. The ADBV is nitrile (the cheap kind). It was very pliable and seemed to function well.
5. The media was in tact. I could see no debris in the media. The media was in tact at all the joints. However, the media was not evenly spaced.
6. The plunger bypass was funtional.

Nothing bad to report. It was interesting to note that the nitril adbv functioned well.

I just thought it was worth posting infor on a non-failure.

I will be getting the oil analized.

About right. You happened upon an older quality Champion Labs filter....before the clicker and Ecore debacle.

There's a definite pattern you'll see in about 12-24 months of observation...as an engineer, I can't see how you'll miss it.

Yes, I understand the design of these filters has been changed.

Although this filter seemed to be fairly well constructed it did not seem worth the $10 that I paid for it. Nothing special about it.
