Wanted to change my oil but I couldn't get the drain plug loose. Long story short....the people that did my oil change last time on my Honda Fit re-used the same washer for the drain plug and overtighten the bolt. I was using a hammer to hit the ratchet to get it to loosen and it didn't even budge. I ended up rounding the bolt and that's why I took it to the dealer.

Good thing is that only the bolt was messed up. The threads on the oil pan was still ok.
My question is the oil they used had a part number of PK520. I'm guessing the 520 part is the oil weight since my Honda Fit takes 5W-20. Not sure what the "PK" stands for.
Anyone know?

Thanks!!

I guess the real answer lies with your Honda Dealer!
We could all guess at what PK520 means but, only the dealer could give you the true answer. The service writer or the parts dept folks may know. Give'em a call!

For me the LAST thing I'd do is take it back to the stealership that put the drain bolt on too tight the FIRST time.

I would have gotten the bolt off then take it to them and demand a NEW plug from their parts department after visiting the "service" manager letting him know of his ham fist'd "techs".

The pan threads may or may not be okay. Keep letting them "service" it and they will not.

And people pay for this "service"?

(in more ways than one I guess)

Good luck... Bill

He never said the dealer did the oil last time, or that he took the car back to the same place. He simply said that the "last" people who changed the oil over-tightned the plug, and that he took it to the Honda dealer this time to correct the situation.

Correct.

To the OP. Who did the over tightening of the bolt?

Any Honda dealer would have 5w-20 in bulk. I would assume PK is their bulk supplier, or some other code the dealer has. Only they would know.

PK520 could simply be their onhand 5W20 bulk oil. PK520 doesn't seem to be a familiar part number for Honda 5W20 oil.

Actually it was Merchants Tire. They sent me a coupon for full synthetic oil change for $20 so I thought it was too good a deal to pass up. Plus they use Valvoline which from doing research in this forum seems to be a great oil. I'll never go back to their place again. So I guess the old adage is true "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself"

I guess I'll call the dealer and see what that part number is. My guess too is that it's bulk Honda oil. I see them advertising "We use genuine Honda parts".

I stand corrected.

Another reason why I ONLY change my oil over the decades. Never had any issues like this.

Seen so many overtightened filters and bolts in my day. Mostly from dealerships.

Merchants is the worst. I'm pretty sure they are the folks who stripped the threads on my pan. I also had oil spray all over the driver side of the engine bay after a change there. Stopped going there after that even though the change and rotation was $20 and it was a 10 minute walk from my house. I also tried to do my own change this time and couldn't get the bolt out.

Should have used a breaker bar or a extension pipe and just used your body weight.

Also always ensure you are using a good quality socket and the correct size. Hard to strip the head of a bold this way unless the bolt is heavily corroded.

The PK number is a Parts Kit, they use Reynolds and Reynolds ERA Dealer Management Software. We used to use that at my dealer, the PK lets the parts person bill that one line out and it takes the oil and filter out of inventory automatically.

Look at the bottom of your invoice and in tiny tiny writing in a corner will be "Copyright Reynolds and Reynolds INC" or something similar, they make management software for dealers as well as numerous forms for dealers. They are arguably the best, but too expensive.

This is the correct way to handle that problem, along with letting oil changers know that over-tightening is occurring. You can get a three-pack of washers at most-all auto-part stores for under $3
