Just Got Back from WalMart.

Well, with the slight break in the weather, I made a trip to Advanced Auto to pick up more Shell Rotella T, Triple Protection 15w40 conventional on sale.

Afterwards, I made a trip to Walmart to see about more oil, since I had cleaned out Advance Auto of Formula Shell last week.

Walmart had the following Synthetic Oils for the best deals I could find.

Quaker State Ultimate Durability $19 for a Jug of 5 quarts in 5w20,30 and 10w30

Castrol Edge with Syntec, Black Jug 5w30 and 10w30 $21 for a Jug of 5quarts.

Walmart SuperTech Synthetic 5w30 and 10w30 $17.50, for a Jug of 5 quarts.


Good prices for all three. I needed a synthetic to mix with the Shell Rotella Diono for more Oil Changes this weekend, weather permitting.

I decided on the Quaker State Ultimate Durability for $19 a Jug in 5w20 to mix with the Shell Rotella 15w40 conventional.

Which Synthetic oil would you have picked for the Mix and why?

Im just curious to "why" you are mixing the oils in the first place?

Why not? Shell Rotella is a very strong oil with the detergents and add pack. IMO....the best bang for your buck. Formula Shell, which I usually use in the mix, is a great Conventional oil and have a very strong add pack with lots of Moly. Why not get the best of two worlds by mixing a strong 15w40 with a strong 5w20,30? Shell Rotella is on sale at a great price and Formula Shell was on clearance at a great price. Too bad most of my Formula Shell has been used up.

Quaker State UD is a great oil for the price at Walmart and also has a great add pack. Some of the vehicles I will put this mix in only require a 5w30 or 10w30 oil. So the mix should work out fine for these SM, SN oils. With the SM and SN oils they can all be mixed with no problems...especially if they are all in the same family....SOPUS.

I mix because i take just over 6 quarts and it doesn't make sense to buy 2 single quarts when I can buy another gallon or 5 qt OR 5 L for less. Now mixing on purpose when you are probably changing the oil long before any dirt additive depletion or acid is around is just extra worry that is not necessary. All oil mixes with each other doesn't matter where it was blended. Only other scenario would be if i was given an opened container of 0w-20 or something id use some HD diesel oil to thicken it up a little for a car requiring a 30 weight

50/50 or 60/40...conventional to synthetic.

Interesting, so @ a 50/50 mix of these two oils:

Viscosity @ 100C, cST = 11.5
Viscosity @ 40C, cST = 73.03
Viscosity Index = 152

So, it looks like a 10w30, just a bit thinner than Rotella T5

Given those three choices, I too would have picked Quaker State Ultimate Durability. It's a fine SOPUS product, what many have described as a "sleeper".

Local Walmart had leftover older Mobil 1 5-quart jugs for $19 and some single quart bottles for $4. I didn't need any oil.

They did have Maxlife ATF for $2.50 which forced me to buy all 8 quarts that is good for a couple drain/refills this weekend.

Castrol ATF's seems to be taking over the Valvoline ATF shelf space.

I too would have bought all of it, up to 14 quarts. That would give me enough for the next 3x drain of our VUE's Honda automatic transmission.

A lot more synthetic than what you would get in a T5. When they say "Synthetic Blend"....how much synthetic is really in the jug??? Who knows?
