Agree. These LiPo jump starters make me cringe.

Ignorance compounded by prejudice.. Join the 21st century. What do you think is in your camera, your cell phone, and BILLIONS of other devices?

They work and they are safe.

Read the reviews.

Nope, operation is totally different rate wise. And heat is generated at the SQUARE of current. So it's orders upon orders of magnitude difference between a consumer device and a jump start.

I've seen small polymer packs pulsed to 1000A or more. I've also seen more spectacular failures than you'll ever know.

Ignorance and arguing about stuff you're not well aware of just gets yourself hurt.

Be careful.

I work for a company that is a leader in the emergency road service industry. We use jump packs or plug-in jumper cable sets, depending on the application. All of the jump packs use a Sealed Lead Acid battery because it has the power to start virtually any car and gasoline powered truck up to 1-ton. Diesel cars are also no problem, but a dual-battery diesel truck might (depending on the condition of the vehicle cables) need two. SLA battery packs are well-known and durable enough for the rough work on the roadside.

I had started off with a jump pack with a 18AH SLA battery.
After about 8 jumps, the SLA battery died, totally dead.
I didn't replaced that battery.

Instead I move onto lithium-ion jump starter.

After many jump starting, it's still working today.

To me, the SLA battery is not capable of doing the jump starting work.

i would be wary of letting the average joe loose with a unprotected lipo jumper.too many are just 4 lfp cells with no fuses or protection.hook it up wrong or short it and its the 4th of july in your face!
its hard to tell which are safe and which are potential bombs without opening it up for a look.
at least an agm based jumper is not likely to go up in a ball of fire due to user error.
as far as performance you get what you pay for.cheap jumpers have really cheap batteries.a good one will perform on par with the battery in the car.mine was repaired with a 15 minute rated csb ups battery.it will start a ford 6.0 diesel with totally dead batteries.its done it 2 times in a row before needing a recharge.thats a real beating!

Me too. Especially the dirt cheap ones sold under a 100 different brand names, and manufactured by some unknown entity in a big shack somewhere in China, with a circuit design and battery of unknown quality. A ticking time bomb. When this thing self-immolates and burns down your garage or house, who will you sue for damages?

I have the jump starter mainly for myself. You really cannot keep in a car since when the jump starter is cold its not as powerful. And when its cold is likely when you would need it.

Jumper cables seem better to me. To carry.

If you think one of these LiPO4 jump packs are going to get overstressed by your gasser V8 or diesel truck, why not just buy two and clip them both up to the battery posts, in parallel?

Impedance variations in mismatched batteries create yet greater issues, where only one of the two batteries are doing the work. In chemistries where the voltage changes with state of charge, this self-regulates a bit, but for phosphate, which has a very flat profile and asymptotic ends, it's easy for one cell to go off the cliff into reversal.
