Saw I can get this stuff at Home Depot for $6/quart. Is this stuff any good? Ran some GTX 10w30 with some MMO for a short time in my new-to-me John Deere tractor which was burning some oil, and the smoke screen seems to have stopped. So, go with this stuff, or spring for Rotella T6? I'm sure the JD SL-rated oil is probably still better than when the tractor was new 28 years ago.

I'd skip it. Still too expensive to run for a basic API rated oil. If I were you, I would try some HDEO instead.

Personally, I like Kohler 10w30 Universal Engine oil that is dual rated SL/CG-4. Local hardware stores stock it for about $3 a quart while Tractor Supply wants some goofy price that I have forgotten about.

I personally use the TurfGard in all of my small engines and that price is way out of line. If you have a Deere dealer near by stop in to price compare, or check on line to price check. Off the top of my head I pay $35 a case (12 qts.)

It is a very good oil for what its designed for.

I've never seen Kohler oil for less than $5/qt around here. TS is about 5.99 and local garden equip dealer is a bit less.

Last time I look at JD oil at Home Depot, I'm pretty sure it was SN rated.

I'm trying Kawasaki K-Tech oil which is actually a bit lower cost at same equipment dealer and like it so far. It also comes in a variety of weights (30w, 10w30, 10w40, 20w50). The 10w30 is dual rated SL/CG-4.

Same hardware stores that sell Kohler and John Deere oil around here also sale the Kawasaki oil. Kawasaki oil was like $3.25 a quart last time I checked which was near the end of the last mowing season looking for discounts. JD still commands the highest price though, but can't remember what it was. Just know it was not the goofy price that Home Depot wants.

Did score Briggs & Stratton 48 ounce jugs of the 30 weight at Walmart for $3.50 each. Walmart closes it out toward the end of August.

Turf Guard is a good oil. I used it for years in my X300. May go back to it once I use up my stash of Citgo syn that I purchased for $.49/qt with a MIR. However, I never paid anywhere near $6/qt for it.

Generally, any JD parts that can be had at HD are much cheaper at the dealer. The fuel filter for my X300 was 3x the cost at HD than I paid at the dealer.

+1.

Turf Gard 10w30 is $5.98/quart at Home Depot. At my local Deere dealer, it's $3.71/quart.

Turf Gard is good oil, but I wouldn't pay any more for it than Rotella T or any other HDEO. The past few years I have been running Super Tech 15w40 in my equipment and customer equipment with great results. You can buy a whole Gallon of Super Tech 15w40 for under $11.

It's probably better than a standard passenger car 10w30 for this application.

I use house brand 15w40 in my equipment or equipment that I work on. Typically Napa when I get it on sale by the gallon.

2 years ago I worked at Lowe's and use to gravitate toward the OPE section and as I recall the JD oil was SN rated. and costed around $5/qt. That seems expensive for a 10w30 SN oil. You're paying for the John Deere name. You can usually buy a gallon of Rotella 10w30 for around $13. It's rated SM and should hold up real well in you OPE, I use it in my snow blower which works real hard, when it works

What are folks using an alternative? I'm thinking a good 10w30 SL rated or above would work. Is the JD oil a synthetic blend?

Since my generator calls for 10w30 as well, I just buy Rotella T5 10w30 by the gallon and use it in the mower and the generator.

I use Mobil 1 10w30 High Mileage, mainly because I have some left over when doing a change on the Volvo. Doesn't anything in your fleet call for 10w30?
