Jimmy Dean died today

Jimmy Dean died today, age 81. I remember when Big Bad John was a hit, and also when he had his own TV show in the 1960s. He always seemed to have his head on straight, unlike some that became stars & thought their you-know-what didn't stink. Made some $ in the sausage business too, before selling his company. Dunno about now, but when he ran it, they donated the hog skins to be processed & used for treating burn victims. Heck, he was even in a James Bond movie!

Another good one gone.

Wow! Now this one really saddens me. Not only good at country music and a good business man, but just an overall good guy. I had the great pleasure of meeting on several occasions in the past 20-years.

I will still eat his sausage in memory of him.

Sad that I found out about it here. Had his life been riddled with scandal , he would have made the front pages.

I recall his country-and-western style variety show in the early '60s, which featured artists like Kay Starr and a black singer/impressionist whose name I can't recall. ("George" something?) Another weekly feature of the show was JD's dialogue with Rowlf the dog -- one of the early Muppets!

One night he was guest host on Merv Griffin's old syndicated Westinghouse talk show from New York, and comic Jack Carter was on. Here's Jimmy trying to be the voice of sanity, while Jack Carter capered about, clowning. Hilarious stuff, though I can't recall anything specific about the show.

He was a class act indeed.

When the Statler Brothers gave their last concert in 2002, they had Jimmy Dean give their last introduction. There were probably thousands of people that would have done about anything to be the one to give that last introduction. The Statler's choice of who would give the last introduction speaks worlds of Jimmy. Jimmy and the Statlers were everything that is good. Jimmy will be missed greatly.
