According to the news, both grades were a synthetic blend, so the people getting the basic made out. I still wouldnt say Conoco is innocent, its propabably putting so little synthetic in its blend it doent even show up.

Well, the Conoco-Philips 10W30/5W30 is labeled as a "synthetic blend" because it uses a group III base oil. I've still got about 3 cases of Trop Artic 10W30 synthetic blend I bought for $1/quart at Dollar Tree....

Find yourself a good ind. repair shop that the owner shows up to work at everyday. His name is on the line and he will generally employ and pay for the best techs he can find. Build a relationship with him and don't desert him when his estimate is 20 bucks higher than the guy down the road and you won't have problems with getting screwed when you have to get the car serviced.

I run a repair facility, and you have hit the nail on the head! I am always amazed how many people will call getting
phone quotes, and take their car to the lowest bidder. After 20+ years in auto service, I can say that the current crop of customers are their own worst enemies in regards to the quality of repairs they are getting on their cars. Most times they can't even figure out who put that failing alternator on their car, and could not find a receipt if their life depended on it. All claim they want quality, as long as quality is the cheapest in town. Todays customer act like you are trying to rip them off when you tell them their tranny fluid is black and needs to be flushed, and then cry like a baby when their transmission fails. Got to love it....

If you read the entire article you will see that the supplier, Conoco Philips, admitts the oil formulations are identicle. What more evidence do you want. It was not a set up. Even if the labs were suspect, nobody challenged them because they knew the accusation was true.

Stay away from auto services owned by chains and use locally owned auto repair shops. The chains have very little vested interest in your community where locally owned business do and the results will show.

It's like fashion. You can buy a $40 shirt, or a $10 shirt. Both will do the same thing, and both were probably made by the same shop in Bangladesh.

Yes, wgtoys, as Johnny says, the franchisees are free to buy from the lowest bidder. Last year in Austin when I took the mother-in-law's Olds across the street to her nearest JL, the guy (manager) asked me if I had an oil preference, since they were stocking and selling Unocal (76 brand) due to the cost of Pennzoil. That's a ConocoPhillips oil like the Motorcraft we sell and nothing wrong with it. I went that route rather than specifying Pennzoil and paying $4 extra.

A great big AaaaaaaaaMEN, brother..... Only had two so far today trying to claim innocence for obvious vehicle abuse.... And that out of only ELEVEN tickets written today. We are deader'n a doornail..... Sort of obvious when my mind drifts and I start reading BITOG! HA!
