Ok so the transmission (32RH on the jeep) is broken. Badly. Dad had to take my car to work yesterday and todya. He had me pull it in the garage today, and wow. IT sounds AWFUL. Like a grinding whine. In order to move AT ALL, I had to have my foot to the floor so it was bouncing off the rev limiter, and it just sounded horrible. It moved like an inch a year like that until it got in the garage. Dad says there is fluid in it. This is a rebuilt transmission from a couple years ago when we killed the original by going through mud. Ever since then the TCC doesn't unlock on it's own, we have to hit the gas or put it in in neutral. It shudders and clunks until we unlock it, and it stalls if we don't do anything. He has always used Valvoline ATF+4 in it. It's always made nasty noise. As a matter of fact. This was before I knew better. The sound it makes when I rev it, is the sound it makes, only a million times worse. Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Death by abuse. Shoulda fixed the TCC lockup problem before it trashed the whole transmission.

Should have. My dad was convinced by other Jeep owners that it was fine and not to worry about it.

We've already got too much money invested in that jeep in form of big tires, lift kit, winch, bumpers, top, skid plates, and a million other things.

He had to get it home. And I had to get it in the garage out of the way. What do you think I should have done? Our driveway is kinda uphill, kinda hard to push it. It doesn't matter, it isn't going anywhere under its own power till it's fixed.

Tow truck.

Probably got a lousy Rebuild and probably should have got a new converter.

HE was driving it home. It's 10 miles from his work to our house. And a tow truck to get up the driveway into the garage? Sure.

Ewwwwww. sorry it happened.

Personally i would have pushed it or towed it not red lined it to its limits because that has a habit of giving as Frank our new guy says gappis de bearings..

Well you saved the money for the tow, sure...

Now maybe your engine is REALLY broken before you put a new trans in look closely at your dip stick if you see the smallest amount of metal your engine was damaged and new bearings should be installed before the crank gets it, if it did not happen already you may not hear the damage for the first few hundred miles or so but if damage was done you should do something as soon as possible, we had a honda that came in for a rebuilt engine because of the same thing..

He drove at most 10 miles on it, I didn't drive it on the road. I have no idea if it needs to be redlined to maintain speed, I have no idea. I'll ask him when he gets home from work. The engine is low mileage (only 37,000 miles on it) can't imagine it would have gotten that much damage, if any from it. I'll suggest it to him to have it checked though. But if it needs new crank bearings, my mom will probably go ape. He says he's found several of these transmissions for as low as $400.

If you are going to keep that Jeep I would pull the trans and take it to a performance trans builder and have a heavy duty rebuild done on it with a new TC and better shift kit and maybe an upgraded set of gears & clutches. I would also get heavier duty flex plates as well and a trans oil cooler. While you have it apart replace the ujoints across the board and do all the OCI's on the whole drive train. Put a magnefine filter in the oil cooler line and a drain plug in the trans pan as well. Otherwise, you are just going to blow another trans if you take it to a regular trans shop.

If all else fails, you can sell it. Part it out and make big dollars on it.

Seats fetch a PREMIUM on due to the abuse others give them. The tires, suspensions etc can all be sold for near what you paid for them on top of other things. People make more money parting a vehicle out rather than selling it whole.

On the ClubXterra forums there are people who part out rolled over X's and make out in the end easy, its like a feeding frenzy of piranhas that bite over the parts.

Oh, get serious!

Its a blown up 32RH- one of the cheapest/easiest modern transmissions to rebuild that exists. We're talking barely more complex than an old TH350 (since all it actually is is a TF 904 with an output speed sensor and VDC solenoid replacing the mechanical governor to allow the computer some measure of control over the shifts.)

Get a decent transmission rebuild, WITH a new convertor this time, and then take care of the Jeep for the next 200,000 miles.

wow only 37,000 miles... i think the best thing would be to go to a transmission shop that you know does a good job and is honest.. You can find out by asking some of the shops around you if you were here in New Jersey i have a great honest shop that does great wholesale work... sometimes its better to take it to a shop because even if you have it rebuilt it may need to come back out and then its double the labor..What year and engine and transmission is it i could ask out trans guy what it should cost i will see him tomorrow or Wednesday we just did a camshaft and heads on a car for him and he will be picking it up within the next day or so

If an engine blew up from being revved to the maximun rpm that the manufacturer recomends then it was on it's way out to begin with.
