The 2.4 replaced the 2.5 in the TJ in 2003. It was also available in the Liberty, Compass, and Patriot.
Well, the Compass/Patriot 2.4 is NOT the same 2.4L engine as the PT Cruiser/Cirrus/Stratus/NeonSRT4 engine. The former is a version of the GEMA "World Engine," the latter was a belt-timed Chrysler design (EDZ) that shares some dimensions (bore center spacing, general crank design, balance assembly, etc.) with the old SOHC 2.2/2.5 dating back to the 80s. The very last application of the Chrysler 2.4 was the 2010 PT Cruiser. That said, they're not ALL that different in what they do to oil, although the GEMA is chain timed so it probably has more shearing potential. The Jeep pushrod 2.5 had slider lifters until the end, so its got the same oil needs/likes as the 4.0 I6.
I'll take your word for the TJ and Libby, I've never really followed 4-cylinder applications in Jeeps that closely (and don't even get me started on the huge palette of transmissions that have showed up in Jeeps!)
All that said... The EDZ 2.4 was *never* given a factory spec for 5w20 oil. Even when it was in production along side the GEMA (which was spec'd for 5w20). I'm quite sure that it would run happily on anything from 0w20 to 10w40, and is certainly OK on M1 0w40, but the factory spec was always 5w30 for the EDZ.
