How long should I make my OCIs on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0? I use dino mostly but have used a synblend from time to time. I drive between 150 and 200 miles a week, usually just to work and back. It's a 15.5 mile commute, 80% highway. The car is started and running for about 25 minutes each way.

I've been doing 3000 mile OCs, which takes approx. 4 months to accumulate. But the longer I hang around BITOG and look at UOAs, 'm thinking I'm tossing out good oil too soon.

How long would you guys wait to change the oil in this car on dino? On a synthetic blend?

MarkC - that has been my thinking too. But like I said, I wonder if I'm wasting good oil.

And a UOA isn't worth the money. Because of past oil bargains, my typical OC costs me about $7 to $10.

I go between 4-6K on my '99 Cherokee. I've been using GTX HM but on the last change used some Quaker State 10W-30 since I got it on sale.

3000 miles or 4 months, what you are doing now is great do not change it, what is the value of your vehicle? why skip an oil change, good dino $13.00, good oil filter $5.00, total $18.00 dollars, why bother to push it, you would not think anything about spending $18.00 dollars on good pizza and a pop why push your luck with valuable transportation that you rely on.

You could go one year or 12,500 miles EASILY on M1EP. Sounds like easy highway miles with oil getting up to full temp.

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem taking that out to 4-5000 miles easy on a cheap dino with that type of driving. In fact, that is my current routine for my '88 Cherokee with the 4.0l.

FWIW, the owners manual recomendation was for a 7500 mile OCI under normal conditions and 3750miles for severe duty. Yes, in 1988 on what was then SF oils (IIRC)!

Take it to 4 or 5000 miles and rest easy.

Maybe not but it's interesting :)
If you have coolant leaking into your crankcase it's worth a new engine.
