Put it on my 97 Wrangler today and I'm going to take it off tomorrow. Why? There's very little clearance between it and the control arm/mount for my tastes. It was worth a shot though. Do other TJ owners that are running this sized filter not care about the tight clearance?

You should be just fine with that filter. I works okay on my wife's 4.0. I know what you mean though ..it does make you nervous until you get used to it.

I'm going to go back to the Purolator Premium Plus in the standard size for peace of mind. I'd hate to be flexing somewhere and pop the filter.

No worries about using the larger filter. Most over at JeepsUnlimited utilize the larger filter and many have very built rigs that are wheeled hard with no problems. I've been in the TJ world for over 5 years and have never heard of this happening. I also use the larger FL1A style on my 4.0L TJ.

I used the oversized wix for my 99 TJ and XJ (part # 1515) and have not had any problems. The TJ is taken rock crawling about 4-6 times a year with no problems.

So there's no clearance issues when the upper control arm is at full stuff? Either way, the FL is in the trash and the stock sized filter is on.

I don't see that anything is near my oversized Wix on my 2001 TJ with the 4.0L ...the closest thing is the motor mount bolt and thats 2 inches from the filter and not moving anywhere

Mine's a 97 with the angled oil filter mount. Your oil filter mount is horizontal, thus you have basically infinite room until you hit the inner fenderwell. Jeep changed blocks when they went to the distributorless ignitions in 99 or 00.

Yes, they still have the angle mount on the 99 ..and the filter does extend below the motor mount.

So ..I guess I understand your anxiety.

Here ya go! Take an R&D hit for the team!! Put the FL1A on it and hit as many "full stuff" situations as you can! Just carry a filter wrench and a spare ST16 in the jeep.

It's for a good cause.

You can always get a Cherokee right angle adapter.

Then it's the 00 models that got the new block. I'll just stick with the stock sized filter...my wife wouldn't be happy if I came home with the engine in a 5 gallon bucket.

I've used Amsoil's SDF-15 on my wife's Jeep Wrangler 4.0 for years with no issue at all. That filter is about twice the length of the factory Mopar sized filter.

Never new Jeep angled the filter down...up,straight back, flat out and now down oh well

So then you know exactly what I'm talking about when I say it's a tight fit. If my Jeep was a street only ride I'd leave the big filter on, but I off-road it so I can't take the chance of damaging the filter out in the boonies.

Yes, he can ..but he needs to take the adapter bolt out and replace it with the filter thread. I'm not sure if the one in the right angle adapter would work in that capacity. My son's 00 Cherokee has one. He's got more room with the right angle adapter than I have without it. He can fit the BIG 1773 if he wanted to ..but we throw a sandwich heater hose oil cooler on it ..so he uses the FL1A size.
