after all the talk, decided to do the legwork and cross reference my 24hp B&S intek twin's oil filter.. so for those that have this motor, a pur-classic # L10241 filter is the match, i stocked up and purchased 5 AT $3.49 each, way better than the $10.00 i was paying for a "mower filter"

yeah, at the B&S small motor shop the filter was like $10.xx , the pure filter is twice as long and 1/3 the price.. and probably a better filter anyways.. i know that due to the filter increased size a little more oil is needed, but im ok with that. also purchased a 4 qrt jug of rotella 30 wt at wallmart for $12.00 so im at around $9.50 (total) for a mower oil change.. im not going to complain.

I've never seen the need to stay with the "factory" size oil filter for this application. All you need is an FL400/PH3600 to cover the majority of Briggs and Kohler engines.

Will an FL-400S do? Not sure what the difference between the FL-400 and the FL-400S is.

Sure will. The "S" stands for silicone anti drain-back valve I believe.

On some Briggs and Kohlers where a FL400 can be used, there are some PH8A big boys that will fit as well. On some PH8A cross-ref's, the filter O-ring comes close to the edge of the filter mount base plate, but doesn't roll over. On some, the gasket is right to the edge & too close for comfort. I guess the only real advantage is the extra oil holding capacity.
