It’s the 1990’s: what motor oil and grade are you using?

I had a 76 Ford Elite. One time I used Sears Spectrum 10-40 and a Sears filter. On a subsequent visit I was talking to the guys in there and they informed me of a filter recall. They gave me new oil and filter to change it out. It seems that those filters had no core in them. The one I pulled off had a spiral wire inside. The filter media looked like cotton that could get sucked through the engine. Although I was worried I never had a problem.

Also to add to my GTX comment above, I was using Quaker State 10W30 (winter) or 40 (summer) for my '67 Cougar before the Subaru.

My dad told me to always tell the guys at the quick lube shop to use Havoline 10W30 only in my '93 Plymouth Duster. Oil and filter change back then was under $20 with tax included. AND......they cleaned the windshield, too. ;)

The cheapest 5W30 at the iffy lube for the parents cars and then my cars, and Castrol 4T 10W40 into the gear box of the 2T dirt bike with Castrol 2T into the gas. I guess in the early 1990's it was Castrol 4T into the CT110 trail bike, but I don't remember changing it often? Maybe once a year... Oil was oil, and I was taught mostly to just make sure there's some showing on the dipstick!
I don't recall any oil related failures though.

PYB 10W30 or VWB 10W30. I moved to Mobil1 about 10 years ago. I got my drivers license in 1968 and AFAIK I’ve never had an oil related engine failure.

Good Day folks and fellow veterans. My real dad always used Valvoline 15w40 in our Olds Vista Cruiser and his 88’ Dakota. What oil did you folks use back then?
In the early 80's, it was Valvoline 10W-40 for a 72 Gran Torino with a 351 Cleveland (2bbl). By the mid 80's, had moved to Mobil 1 5W-30/10W-30/15W-50 in an 85 Mustang GT 5.0.

I had a Mazda B2200. It got a steady diet of 3 quarts of Castrol GTX 10w30 and a quart of 20w50 because it burned some oil. Put almost 300k KMs on that little beast.

I used Castrol because we lived in Canada at the time and they sponsored the CASCAR series and DJ Kennington.

I remember Exxon being $.59 a at on sale @ Kragen.
Exxon Superflo and Shell Fire & Ice would run on sale at 59 cents a quart at Pep Boys in NC. I even recall buying some Exxon synthetic back then in a white bottle. Probably relabeled Mobil1. Superflo conventional came in a red bottle, Fire and Ice in a black bottle.
