It’s the 1990’s: what motor oil and grade are you using?

90's ... That wasn't too long ago, was it?

Ran Mainly 5W30s cause that what the OM and 710 said. I didn't have a 5W20 car until I bought the first Mustang Bullitt in 2001.

Ran Havoline black can (back when it was good) Formula Shell, Rotella Triple Protect Multi vehicle 10W30 in the old EJ subarus, EXxon Superflo, Valvoline White Bottle All Climate in the Chevy. After Y2k went to Mobil clean 5000 almost exclusively with some Defy - that was some special sauce!

Tried M1 through the decades in many cars, ended up dumping it almost immediately in most cases; but one car really liked it. A 2001 Mitsibishi Mirage Coupe DE commuter box, back when you could get these sweet but fragile gems cheap-cheap.

Hated GTX and that old forum fave PYB in the 2k's.

I used Castrol XLR 10w30 in my 88 Dodge Shadow Turbo and then when I got my first of two different 87 Mustang GTs I started using Amsoil 10w40 actually. Then for most of the other cars that I had in the 90s I was using Mobil 1 5w30 (tri synthetic formula for some of that time)

I know my dad (then I) used 10W-30 in the winter and 10W-40 in the summer. No brand loyalty - whatever was on sale or had a rebate. I remember Quaker state a fair bit. But no Penzoil. Dad would not use Penzoil?
i seem to recall there was some rumor or maybe even truth about pennzoil causing sludge at some point? probably two decades earlier but maybe people still had sworn off pennzoil as a result.

I used mostly Mobil 1 5w30 in my 1990 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0, and then the same in my 1993 Jeep Wrangler 2.5. I think I mostly used Fram filters.
Good Day folks and fellow veterans. My real dad always used Valvoline 15w40 in our Olds Vista Cruiser and his 88’ Dakota. What oil did you folks use back then?

PYB (Pennzoil Yellow Bottle for those of you living in Rio Linda)
Valvoline WB

Then I found Max-Life, then found BITOG and its been a life of agony and fear ever since worrying about those CATs with my HDEO! 🤣

First oil I can remember dad using is QS 10W30 conventional so that’s what I automatically defaulted to like many people. At some point he switched over to M1 and I switched over to VL. He is still a M1 guy but I’m brand agnostic now.

High volatility low mweight base grp I and II oil with a load of butatdiene rubber Vii o_O:LOL: Then add: Stuck Choke.

Pennzoil yellow bottle 10W-40 carried my 1985 Honda Accord into the 21st century with not a single mechanical failure. Why did I choose this particular oil? One reason...

I had several cars throughout the 90s and all got Pennzoil 10W-30 and Fram Extra Guard filters. One oil and filter brand for all. And guess what...none of them ever suffered oil-related issues!

1982 Olds Cutlass Supreme V8 265
1991 Chevy S10 V6 2.8
1988 Jeep Wrangler 4 cyl
1989 Olds Cutlass Ciera 4 cyl

Most likely the original Platinum in the silver bottle...preferably in a 5W-40 thickie grade.

Pennzoil had a weird full synthetic before Platinum came out, it was in quart bottles with these little handles like you'd have on a 5 qt jug but doll-sized.

To answer OPs question, a $1.97 STP filter from Walmart, with the cellophane window in the box so you could see it was there, as a Champ labs product approved by the Minimopar study. Oil was Tech2000 from Walmart, $.74 a quart, then Superflo from Ames, $.69 after rebate. Back then 5 quart jugs weren't as much of a thing-- M1 was about the only thing I bought in the jug-- so picking up a cardboard case of 12 quarts was the way to stock up. And nothing since has been as satisfying, except maaaaaybe the Autozone December clearances.

Growing up in the 90s I was exposed to 5w-30. My father did have a 75 monte with the 454 until I was around 5 too young or didn’t have an oil interest yet to remember he may have used a 10w-40 or 20w-50 in the summer.
