Good Day folks and fellow veterans. My real dad always used Valvoline 15w40 in our Olds Vista Cruiser and his 88’ Dakota. What oil did you folks use back then?

Got my license in ‘94. First car was an ‘85 Buick Skyhawk 2.0L 4-cylinder.
It got Castrol GTX 5W-30 and a jobber filter from the Mr. Lube quick change place I took it to every 3k.

I'm likely going back a decade too far, but my Dad went through a lot of this stuff.

In the 90's, it was Pennzoil yellow bottle... since it was available just about anywhere.

In the 90's it was likely Delo or Napa branded oils in 10W-30 up to 20W-50 depending on the application. Sometimes Chevron Supreme. We had drums of Delo at the families water pump company & used it for several of the ranch vehicles as well. When I moved to the Central Coast in '98, the local AutoZone would regularly have Valvoline on sale so my commuter cars would get that 90% of the time.

I know my dad (then I) used 10W-30 in the winter and 10W-40 in the summer. No brand loyalty - whatever was on sale or had a rebate. I remember Quaker state a fair bit. But no Penzoil. Dad would not use Penzoil?

Bought my first Mobil 1 in the late ‘90s when I was about 18.

Used it on the advice of a friend’s dad who was a successful dentist and collected cars.

Among the cars he had, that I remember: An AMC S/C Rambler (4-speed Hurst) and a Coronet Hemi sedan, similar to these:

He was a huge Mobil 1 fan, and always gushed about what an incredible oil it was. He’s a big reason I got interested in cars and oil.
