I'm not one to get sad about things, but after 18 years, I'm just throwing a relationship to the curb. Just like that.

I was taking out the snow ballast, the junk in the trunk, all the wrapper - heck some things from when the children were just learning to walk.

Leave just the registration, manuals and insurance card.

For alas old Volvo I will miss you fondly.

1995-2014 Volvo 850 - May thee fare well. Via Con Dios old buddy we have truly been through a lot.

My Volvo lasted just over 18 years. A 1986 740 Turbo, white with black trim. It was quite a nice car. Very troubled initially but it settled down eventually.

The body was getting a bit rusty but the powertrain was still quite stout. Anyway we don't like rusty cars...

Cars mark the passing of life's events. Mine started with life as a GP, 4 years of residency, specialist exams, followed by a career well under way. And my daughter learned to drive in that car.

This car has actually been fairly flawless in the drivetrain and most other aspects, but many niggling broken plastic bits drove me nuts the last year or so.

Turning in the brickboard membership as well?

I've had my 740 wagon for 10yrs next March ... and would like send it to the great beyond but it won't let go of the "Volvo for Life" slogan and keeps hanging on...

Thanks guys!

So to add insult to injury. The dealer offered me a whopping $500. Would not even look at the car. 1996? 170K? "Too old".

Kinda messed up my plans. I was all set to pay cash and figured on around ~$1500 at the very least. So I needed to finance at 2.9%, and of course the minimum they will finance is $10K. All because I was a few $100 short! Arrgh. Not a big deal really - my credit score came up 777

the sales manager thought that was the best thing in awhile. I'll just pay it off right away. $184/mo car payment is funny.

Now I will either sell or donate the car. I could sell it for $2500 is a flash, $3000+ if I take my time. Donation does sound good too.

What say you car hounds?

This might sound a little silly, but you should post it on a Volvo board and sell it to someone who will appreciate it and take care of it for its next 170K.

Those are really nice cars. I'd take your time and sell it, the holidays will be over in a couple of weeks and you might find a Volvo enthusiast looking for a cheap project car.

When I was in HS I would have been all over a car like that, I would have fixed it right up.
