I've searched, and it seems that mobil 1 75w90 is good all 'round in the toyotas. This includes the front and rear diffs, and the transfer case as well as the manual gear box. But at $9 a quart at kragen/autozone, I think I may go with amsoil or redline.

My buddy's taco is hard to shift, really notchy; i dont believe the fluid has ever been changed. I was thinking of redline MT-90 in the gearbox and 75w90 in the rear diff. Either that or Amsoil MTG and then their 75w90 in the rear.

His is a 2WD, not 4WD so no worrying aobut xfer case and the front diff.

Maybe something conventional would be better? But may as well go synthetic.

$9/qt is a good deal for M1 75w-90 at Kragen. Even at wholesale, Amsoil would cost more.

Not true. Supposedly, many Toyotas also have a "final drive" unit that requires service as well. Check the manual to be sure, but most "final drive" units for cars with a MT take the 75w-90 as well.

Delo esi gear lube will equal or out perform M1 for way way less. I have used mt and mt90 Redline in my 92 4X4 6 cyl toyo and both work real good .Redline gear lube$ work well ,But are not needed in a Toyota.

And what you gonna do?.., you only need about 3qt for transmission and even less in rear deff. Most good synthetics 75w90 cost around nine dollars +- $1 anyways.
M1 gear oil performs extremely well in toyota truck including smoother shift and mpg increase. Heard some good results with redline (don’t even think to find cheaper then M1) Other options – you may buy cheapest dino ST or something like that for about $6 a 5qt jug.

I can buy redline 75w-90 gear lube any day of the week for $10 canadian at my local tuner shop.

That means our American friends should be able to pick it up for $7.50 - $8.00USD.

Yes, myoilshop.com used to be a sponsor here and they sell Red Line Oil for something like $8.00 per quart. I think it's less than that but with shipping it's close to $8.

Since the quantities are small and oil change intervals usually very long, I don't let the cost of a gear oil disuade me ... unless I think I'm getting screwed.

I have 3-4 bottles of Amsoil MTF synchromesh 5w30 laying around, so i'll use that in the transmission, and then imma buy some Mobil 1 75w90 for the rear diff.

I don't think the Amsoil MTF is too thin for this app; i'm sure it will be better than whats in there.

The 5w30 synchromesh would be too thin for Toyota manual gearbox, especially if a 75W-90 GL5 is recommended in the owners manual as some I've serviced. I would think that Molakule's GL4/GL5 MTL would be a great oil in this app, or one of Amsoil's 75W-90 GL5 or their GL4 Manual Transmission Gear Lube. I've used Redline MT-90 with good success in the past as well in manual gearboxes.

Note taken. I went ahead and went the next town over and bought 3 qts of Amsoil 'MTG' 75w90 at about $6.99 ea. I am hesitant to use the thinner MTF in the toyota transmission.

(I'll use the Amsoil MTF in my civic which is currently running Redline MTL.)

Will report back later with results.
