Hi all.

Just fell over this 2014 super bowl, Chrysler commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR1j4tqRJPM

Is this commercial really trying to tell us that Detroit invented the car. And apparentlig also the autobahn(they show a autobahn sign) don,t get me wrong, loving your fatherland I a beautiful thing. But that is just hilarious.

So.. is it meant to be a bit funny?. Or are they really serious?

It was really more so trying to make the claim that Detroit invented America's car culture, which is true. They didn't invent the car, but Detroit made it accessible to every household in America.

Good commercial, if not quite up to the level of last year's Clint Eastwood spot.

After watching that commercial I agree.

Seems that me that. At best they are misinformed or at worst. They lie.

...

That is what I got out of it... you can't take advertising in the US too literally.

I don't get the "imported from Detroit" thing either...

I agree! Who really believes that Bob Dylan drives a Chrysler 200? I'm sure it was a stunt double during all of the interior shots with Bob's silhouette.

That, and that Detroit changed the automobile, making it an "original", and raising the bar in terms of automotive design that spurred the rest of the world to improve as well. I did not get the sense that they were trying to say that the automobile was invented in the US. Reinvented, maybe, but invented? No.

If FIAT gave me a 200 I would drive it...to another dealer to trade it.

Does their numbering system mean the 500 is higher in the lineup than the 200 and 300?

Nothing tops the "My name is Ram, my tank is full, I'm not built to last" commercials.

The Jeep Cherokees are "built free". Built free of what? Quality control? That seems to be about on par with Chrysler products.

That goes for advertizing worldwide. Some amount of marketing puffery is generally acceptable, and the companies certainly take advantage of it.

I expect such shenanigans from foreign companies.

I was a bit confused by how they pushed Chrysler as American despite the fact that it became fully Italian-owned as of a few weeks ago.

Also, Dylan has become a huge sellout if he's really doing commercials now.

Yeah, because Japanese and German car ads are SOOOO intellectual... Bouncing chickens and topless androgynous models be darned! :-)
