Is this possible?

For those oil companies that purchase their base stocks from XOM or Shell...Let's use Valvoline as one example since they purchase their base oil from a seller. Is it possible that XOM for instance could be selling them a "lesser quality" base stock, and holding back the better stuff for their own products?

I would say it would be a contract sale with the specifications/characteristics of the base oil spelled out in the contract.

That's not such a crazy question. I've thought about it many times.....I always thought it might be at the root of the old S2K 0w30 issues.

But alas, Amsoil trusts but verifies as FrankN4 says!

Thanks FrankN4...that would definately be a likely possibility.

I'm just wondering if Shell sells their base oils to others, because if so, then it would be safe to assume that other conventional oil producers that don't create their own base would also be group II+ as is Pennzoil YB. ??

That would be the wrong assumption. Shell does not sell Group II+ base stocks to anyone (well almost anyone). Shell uses Group II+ base stocks in Pennzoil products only and they do sell Group II+ to one other company, but I cannot disclose who that is, although we all know them as a high quality product.

Shell does sell Group II base stock to several blenders.

Oh come on Johnny..your killing me!!! the suspence!! We all want to know who Shell sells their Grp II+ base oils to?

I don't think it would be right for me to share that information without the permission of the company that is buying it, and they have chosen not to make it public. They have a contract/sales agreement with Shell and there is a privacy clause in the agreement.

So my lips are sealed. Sorry

you cant disclose, but I venture to guess that it is chevron, who won't be self-sufficient in group II+ for a few years...

For a steady-state chemical process, what is the "lower quality" stuff? Mixtures produced due to the change or a transient in process conditions? If there is a mix of stuff there that shouldnt, very simple analytical techniques such as flame ionization detection could be used to determine. For a type II or below, there may be too large a variety of compounds to determine, but at that point youre likely talking about an "inferior" product anyway.

wow... and since youre telling me that, wont we ultimately figure it out by the process of elimination???

Better not tell us if we're right or wrong anymore :)

I'm going to guess Castrol

Not Castrol, but at one time they did sell them some Group III for their Syntec.

I've said enough so you all can throw all the brands you want to out there.

LOL!!! Yeah, I respect Johnny for that. It's not his fault, and he has to keep this secret or else he could get into a lot of trouble.

It's all interesting none the less. I recently quit using Pennzoil and went to Valvoline Maxlife. And for me and the way I drive, using a grp II vs II+ would be splitting hairs, but I like the idea of knowing I'm using the best conventional oil available. Now I'm thinking of going to Pennzoil HM even though it's not a syn-blend, but what if it's Valvoline buying that Grp II+ base stock from Shell.

You know.. Of all the gueses I've heard, I'd say it's Valvoline buying Shell's base oil. Especially since they are hammering on XOM over the quaility of their full syn. I can't imagine Valvoline purchasing base from XOM and then making acusations such as the ones we've heard. (???)

But Valvoline DOES buy from XOM.

I can't remember either, other than it was covered and viewed as factual.

Valvoline takes a sample of the base oil out of each shipment and tests it. If it dose not meet there quality level they send it back.
A part of makeing a quality oil is you must have consistancy in everything.
