Its been awhile since I have bought a ST, but I'm changing oil on a altima I'm about to sell. so I went to WM and picked up some ST HM and a ST filter. I was in a hurry so I didn't fondle the filters like usual. Noticed this after I got home

Is this gap normal? It is a ST6607

Where's the base gasket? I don't like that design on the base seam with the sealant.

Find a Parts Plus store, their filters are under $3.00 and look a heck of a lot better than that one.

I took the gasket off in the first picture... it is back on in the second one.

Just wondering if I got an odd ball one or if they are all like that now. seems like they are so I'm gonna run it.

Take a goooood look at the gap in at least 1/2 of the first picture--(it's the dark part)

Something is severly messed up with that filter. I would not use it

I don't see a gasket in the 2nd pic. I don't think I would use a filter that has a gasket that you could "remove" and then "reattach"...

You can remove the base gasket on most oil filters ... not a big deal, they just pop in and out. That's why you need to be careful when changing filters to ensure the old gasket doesn't stick to the engine.

Ditto. The last 3 PureONE filters I've used have left their gasket to the mounting surface on the engine/block, but I 'may' be over-tightening mine a bit, IDK.

The glue is standard construction for the non ecore ST's. Some time back, pics were posted showing some with excess glue.

The one shown may be perfectly fine(sealed), but, I wouldn't be particularly thrilled with the gaps in the glue.

So you usually fondle the oil filters, huh? LOL! You truly belong here with us on BITOG!!

Ok, Tex, thanks for the new pics....thought I was going loco there for a few. I didn't know those gaskets just popped on and off like ya'll say they do. Every time a new filter comes out of the box, it's always there, and the old gasket comes off with the old filter every time. Good to know.

Been thinking about this more. Even if the glue gaps were to allow oil through, which I doubt, it would be on the intake side of the filter, so doubtful it would make a difference. Most it "might" do is affect adbv effectiveness, and I doubt that too.

So while it looks questionable, likely won't hurt anything.

And, the gasket can come off with filter removal, which as ZO said, is why you should check the used filter, and clean the gasket seal area on engine when doing an oil/filter change.
