I do want to know what the deal is with the bottom shelf $2/qt generic brand.
Is it same spec and “no frills”, or actually [censored] oil ?

Yes it's good stuff if you want a good bargain. It meets api sn specs. Walmart has a way of getting things cheaper than everyone else it's just as good as Valvoline if you ask me. It's blended by one of the major players which varies from time to time sometimes Warren oil, I've even seen ExxonMobil bottles before.

Yes. There is nothing wrong with using it. ST meets SN and GF5 standards and is officially licensed. Nothing to worry about

Walmart uses more than one supplier. Those bottles look like WPP, which makes many house brand oils, and also Mag 1. ST in other regions is supplied by XOM and Citgo; the Mobil bottles are most likely rebranded Mobil Special.

It's api SN oil. It's fine. K-Mart has their S oil for $1.99 now on sale if you want a better deal.

I'd use it in a Ferrari as long as it met the specs. Walmart may sell a lot of stuff, but they honestly don't sell any junk.

It's fine enou for a $2.44 oil. Would I use it over a name brand? No. Would I trust it in what I use it in? Yes.

They gain cost efficiencies by using the exact same add pack in all grades and viscosities, and nothing exotic...

Like everyone else mentioned, it's perfectly good oil. I would have no issue using it, but I would buy it right now. With the Mobil 1 oil rebate, I would buy a jug of synthetic for the same price.

They may not sell any junky oil, but to say that Walmart doesn't sell any junk might be a bit of a stretch. In fact, when I want to buy junk, I choose Walmart ahead of the second hand store or rummage sales.

Yep walmart oil is Warren for most so its ok but I have run a lot of Smittys oil in many different cars and its good also.

I have only run cheap oil in my turbo car for the last 30 years. Ran Smittys, Peak, Supertech and many off brands I can't remember. As long as it is API approved and is cheap I have no problems. Just read the label and check out PQIA to be sure. I like Chevron in my new car (11 years old), but I get that on sale for not much more $$ than the off brands.

Have used in the past, no issues. Just dont really try to push it to 10k.

Normally a jug of mobil5k is VERY VERY close to that price. $13 or something, which comes out to $2.60. I get the jugs because its just easier to open and pour 1 thing then 5 smaller bottles.

Walmart sells a lot of brand name goods. Which, among them is "junk"?

It went down to $8.01/5qt jug briefly, if bought on line and picked up at the store. But it's back up to $11.44/5qt jug now. With the Mobil 1 rebate of $12/5qt jug it ends up costing abound only $2 more than the SuperTech oil, a "no brainer"
