Is there a hoarding gene?

I like having a 'library' of oils and filters in my closet for study and use.

I do not buy oil or filters I cannot use.

Well, I take that back. 10w40 isn't exactly spec'd for my vehicles, but that's why I have 5w20 to slim it down...

I think it becomes a problem when people start hoarding filters they cannot use because they do not have the vehicle for them.

Eh, I'm glad I hoarded oil back in the mid 00's. I still have one car spec'd for SJ so no worries there. ANd the other newer ones haven't seemed to mind. Heck most of my oil was purchsed for $5-7 per gallon or 5 quart container...

As for filters, I can see buying say 3 on Amazon but not one everytime you walk into Walmart. You might end up with filters for a vehicle that no longer runs or similar reasons.

+1....WalMart does most of my hording (on their shelves).

Since I only have one vehicle....I keep enough oil on hand to do one or two oil changes ahead. I currently have two five quart jugs (M-1 0w20...and PP 5w20) & 3 filters.

I look at those pictures of guys with hundreds of quarts of oil on their shelves....and feel it surly has to be an addiction. Most of that oil is SN, GF-4....or below, so they are using oils that are a lower standard than the current SN, GF-5's available now....IMO...and this causes many of them to change out their oil much to early....because they have to use up their large stash.

I've got a pretty big stash...150+ QTs...but most of the oil was bought for $0.98/QT and it includes M1 TDT 5W40, Edge 5W30, QSUD 10W30 and PU 5W30...all SM bought on clearance.

All of my cars specify SJ, SL or SM...so, all that cheap oil meets specs for the cars I own...who cares if the stash is not SN? Neither are the cars...

change out on a reasonable interval of 6,000 on the Toyotas and 7,5000 on the European cars...I am in no rush to use up the stash, since I would then have to pay the crazy retail prices they're getting for oil now...further, if I do only 2 oil changes/year on the below listed fleet, that's 66 QTs of oil/year, not including the Packard, or any top off required...and some of the cars are getting 3 per year based on mileage...

And yeah, I have the gene...

I have about a one year supply of oil and filters. I would be concerned that if I got the hording disease and acquired a 5+ year supply that the oil would become outdated and not meet the requirements of newer vehicles. That means that possibly the oil I got on a super sale would not be worth much to anyone. Ed
