Is oil consumption normal?

Proud ownership of a SAAB 9-5, B205E engine, 280K miles with turbo for 5 years:
- it had been burning 1 quart per approx. 1000-1500 miles even from Mobil 1 5W50
- engine refurbishment (head, piston rings, rod bearings) result no (measurable) oil burning anymore at 6K OCI with Mobil 1 0W40.

Volvo S60 5 cyl 2 litre turbo with 216K miles, 1 quart per 3K miles from Mobil Super 5W40.
Funniest one: air cooled VW Bug from 1971, 1.3 boxer emgine, Mobil GTX 15W40: no oil consumption at 3K miles OCI.

Lucky you........ for me to make 10 000miles i would need to top up about a liter of oil, but then again my pcv valve is bad

I wonder... I figure locking up is not likely from poor cylinder lubrication. Even if you really starved the cylinder walls for oil the big issues are that a lot of galling and scoring would happen, the rings would overheat and lose their tension, and compression would eventually drop so low it couldn't keep running, or a piston skirt or ring land would crack off and do a lot of collateral damage... but as long as the bearings have oil and there's coolant around the cylinder its probably not going to seize up completely.

On Italian and British cars its normal, heck of a Jag isn't burning or leaking some fluid its empty!

A lot of companies have been having issues with oil rings lately, like Toyota. My mom dumped her low mileage Rav4 because it was burning enough oil to make an old Jag embarrassed!

my friend has a 2014 toyota and has an oil burning problem but like she says its a lease and will be going back.. I told her to complain when she brought it back for service just to have it on record.

Oil level dropping between interval is outside the norm on the jtd engine (also used in the cruze now), and has never been normal on these engines past break-in.

22k interval, btw...
