Is Mobil 1 different?

Just recently got a new truck and the PO ran valvoline in it, was thinking about sticking with it or running QSUD. I used to like Mobil 1 a lot, but I've heard recently that it isn't as good as it used to be, due to a change in the formulation? Any truth to this?

Also what is the difference between regular Mobil 1 and EP? Just curious since they're the same price.

Thanks in advance!

Formulations change all the time, not just at Mobil. I would not let that stop me from using it.

EP has more additives to allow for longer drain intervals.

Polarisdude...how long was your winter?? Just kidding. If you like M1, use it. It makes excellent oils, the website is user friendly and their specs are up to date, easy to read and obtain. Of coarse, I would have no issue using either of the other as well but M1 and Pennzoil Platinum are no brainers for many a bitoger.

We need to make a sticky that answers this question because it's been asked till I could scream.

Nothing personal to you Polaris, of course.

Even with any formula changes, M1 is still one of the best oils available. I don't use it, but I have no doubts about it's ability to lubricate and protect. Use it with confidence.

Personally, I think Valvoline SynPower is an under rated oil. I also think that whether you use Valvoline SynPower, M1, or QSUD, your engine will be just fine. Each one of them (or any of the other name brand synthetics) will protect your engine, and none of them will allow anything bad to happen that the other oils would've prevented.

I agree with that too. I like the entire Valvoline line.

There has not been one credible report that says Mobil 1 is any better or any worse than any other synthetic oil on the market. The fact is that just about any API certified synthetic oil, regardless of its base stock, will provide excellent protection for your engine when following your manufacturer's recommended oil change interval.

Use what you prefer based on what factors are most important to you (price, availability, favorite race team's oil sponsor, manufacturer's recommendation, whatever).

Any brand name oil/dino or synthetic is good. We have discussed in here many times that oil is not blowing engines up 99 out of a 100 times. So, Mobil One is great stuff, go for it.

+1

The truck is a GMC Canyon with the 3.5 I5 engine. I may end up sticking with SynPower after hearing you guys say its good stuff!

Enjoy the SynPower it is excellent. You could use Amsoil XL line of oil as I have heard that they get their base stocks from Mobil 1

I have used M1 oils for 37 years at 10K OCIs, and find today's M1 is equal to or better than any formulation of the past.

Tig, from reading what I've seen you post here before you seem like you're a really knowledgeable person in general and when it comes to Mobil 1! Do you believe that it is superior to other oils? I'm open to hear anything!

I wonder if the OE line is. I've been thinking about stepping down to the OE and going by OLM.

Why? I don't know.

If you compare their additive packs everything is just about the same across the board with exception of the TBN level. I like the OE but I just got some XL on sale for 6.99 at Mills Fleet Farm.
I think the OE and XL lines both have Group 3 base stock and Signature Series is Group 4

The guy has been using it for 37 years. If he didn't believe it, why would he be using it?
