I haven't heard much of anything on the Mobil 1 0w40 "european car formula"? Is it not as robust as the truck and SUV 5w40 or is it not worth the money? The reason I ask is that my walmarts do not have the 5w40 but they all have the 0w40 variety.
Can't say about the SUV 5w-40, but the 0w-40 meets the VW 502 spec requirement for our Audi A4 1.8T. It's protected this turbo engine quite well for the last couple of years. I do keep the OCI at no greater than 4500 miles though, but for the turbo engine I would do that with any oil that I used.
Our use varies between M1 0w-40 and Syntec 5w-40. Both have been fine.
It has a lower HTHS # and shear's more easily in some applications and it is closer to a 0W35 then truly a 0W40. Terry Dyson will often refer to it as a 0W35. It does a fine job in most applications but their is room for improvement. The 5W40 TSUV is not truly Delvac-1. Many here suspect from what EM has said many times that TSUV was initialy Delvac-1 re-bottled until they had PAO-AN 5W40 formula ready to put in the bottle. It did have and still does have a very simalar additive package though to D-1.
Well, since the 5-40 is Delvac and diesel oils have a more robust addative package, then yes the SUV 5-40 is a better oil than the gas-only 0-40.
However, both are good synth.'s. The only other determinant is the proximity of the 2 numbers. A 5-40 being more robust than a 0-40 since it's less widespread. That translates to less volatility and consumption as well especially in 'worn' or older engines.
I believe Mobil 1 0w40 is used in the Liberty CRD and can be used in some diesel applications. I personally would buy the 5w40 no matter the car for the fact it is more shear stable and designed to deal with soot. I have the same choice when I buy Lubro Moly Synthetic oil for my car, either their 0w40 or 5w40.
