Is Lubegard Red necessary....?

Will be changing out my ATF soon....but will be using Mobil Syn ATF....instead of Mercon V.

Since Mobil ATF is synthetic....do you guys think I need to use Lubegard Red....or should I pass ?

Short answer no. But if you do let me know I would like to know how your "butt" dyno lets you know how different your transmission performs if you use it.

I'd skip it but people here seem to be as addicted to it as crack.

Lubegard Red does have some merit when dealing with old trans. that have problems. I would not use it or any other additive unless there was a shifting problem.

No need with the syn fluid or any licensed fluid. I usually use it when I use cheap ATF.

You don't "need" it, but it sure won't hurt & probably will help over the long run...

I put it in with my Amsoil ATF in the Camry & Saturn. GMC Sierra is next.

Exactly. Only its better than crack, but just as habit forming. Once you try it in an older transmission and notice the improvement in shift quality you'll be an addict.

If the transmission already has problems (e.g. shudder), then Lubegard recommends the Platinum bottle. On the other hand, if the transmission works fine, why bother?

Mercon V is synthetic.

+1 Bingo. It will only make it better, it wont hurt to add it. I say go for it

Yep, addictive because it works! Have it in all 4 transmissions right now, noticable improvement in 2 of them and certainly never hurts anything.

Mercon V is synthetic.


That's not a given. Valvoline lists somewhere in a FAQ that their Mercon V is a blend. I got the impression that Castrol Mercon V is a blend too. At least I don't remember seeing on their site any claims that it _is_ a synthetic. Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF is also most likely not synthetic. Otherwise, there would be no need for the Mobil Multi-vehicle synthetic ATF. My personal recommendation is to do away with the multi-vehicle ATFs and just use Motorcraft if it is available affordably.

Valvoline used to say Mercon V synthetic on the front of the bottle.

Having been a doubter this site made me a newfound believer.

Lubegard is great. Documented reductions in transmission fluid temps, better shift quality, and SPECIFICALLY mentioned by name in manufacturer TSB's.

The real deal, not snake oil.

They have a FAQ somewhere that says that Valvoline Mercon V is no longer synthetic in order to satisfy more price conscious customers. Of course, it could still be a blend.
