All of these engine cleaners are SNAKE OIL.

How can something "seem" to increase compression? It either does or it doesn't.

Increased compression using Pennzoil is "cleaning" If say, Auto-RX (there I said it) does it, it is not.

I believe it was brought up that increased compression had been noticed with Pennzoil Platinum motor oil. The same claim was made for Auto-RX Plus. I think the point that was being made was that a motor oil could potentially increase compression also. And Pennzoil Platinum did seem to do some cleaning in Falcon_LSs engine (not sure if that is his username).

It was sprintman, and maybe some others, who said that they had observed increased compression when Auto-RX Plus was used. But sprintman was against photographs of the engine and said that there was no need for photographs.

And this post is not some secret plot to promote MMO. I have correctly pointed out that MMO is cheap and readily available. Go to a Wal-Mart Store and price it yourself. It is dirt cheap compared to some engine cleaners. I am completely ready myself just to use Mobil 1 High Mileage (HM because my car has 109,000 miles and Mobil 1 because I can't find Pennzoil Ultra where I live). If a motor oil can clean well enough, why use anything else (including MMO)?

I am somewhat interested in Lubegard engine flush because I have had good luck with their products and because there is very limited information here about how effective Lubegard engine flush is. One guy uses 1-2 ounces and drives his car. And it is pretty cheap also.

But if motor oil alone will get the job done there is no reason to use anything else.

This thread might have well been entitled: "PREVENTION is much better than redemption!

And what 147_Grain says is exactly true. If somebody uses Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Ultra (Platinum) from the time their engine is new they probably will not need to use a special engine cleaner anyway. We have photographs of engine interiors here at this website that people have generously supplied that show how clean engines can be with quality motor oil changed at reasonable intervals. There is even a photograph of the interior of an engine where conventional motor oil was used and the engine looks pretty clean.

The only exceptions would be if an engine had mechanical or design problems that resulted in sludge build up or if somebody neglected changing their motor oil.

We usually end up going in circles with these discussions. There will always be a situation that pops up where a person buys an a car with unknown history that needs a good internal engine cleaning, even with a perfect maintenance program. Others might develop lifter ticks. Or someone buys a new car and later finds by design the engine develops sludge and the need for a cleaning. Sometimes it happens just by the way a vehicle is used. Like it or not there will always be a market for engine cleaning products, and companies will make and sell them. Needing them, or using them depends on the individual and the vehicle. Some people will never use them on principal or because of their belief system. That's life.

I'll take a compression test comparison over cursory visual inspections of "non working" parts of the engine.

I'll also take increased compression readings and reduced fuel consumption over 'pretty pictures' of areas that don't matter, every time.

I have never said anything about photographs. Best you don't put words in my mouth. I'm just one of many here who need something more tangible than pictures to ascertain a products performance!

Without a compression test, you don't know if it increased compression or not. "Seems" to doesn't cut it.

How about increased compression, reduced fuel consumption, and an engine that looks clean too?

We only need to clean the mechanically significant parts of the engine.

Yet we take pictures of the mechanically insignificant parts and then say the cleaner did not clean.

The funny thing about the last round of testing and photographs was that even the owner of Auto RX bought into the success criteria as being cleaning the mechanically insignificant parts.

As you go round and round in your arguments, step back and ask yourself whether you're participating in a Pepsi taste challenge commercial or if you're more interested in figuring out the interaction of mechanics and chemicals viz cleaning of different parts of the engine.

Well, I have some of these people on Ignore and I am not going to read what they say. But this post has certainly brought out the people who do support the expensive engine cleaners.

I think it is logical to believe that a successful engine cleaner will not merely increase compression or improve fuel mileage but also clean other areas of the engine. Otherwise advertise the product as a product that improves compression, not as an engine cleaner.

We have seen evidence that some motor oils can keep an engine clean. What is wrong with telling people to try motor oil first? If Mobil 1 can keep an engine clean maybe it can also clean a dirty engine. Exxon/Mobil and Pennzoil openly claim that their motor oils can clean. Pennzoil has engine sequence data. And the Mobil 1 and Pennzoil oils can work by themselves and don't need to be added to a motor oil.

We have been told here to add 2-3 bottles of engine cleaner and go twice the distance than the directions indicate. For that kind of money a person could do a few short OCIs with Mobil 1 or Pennzoil oils. I will pick the Mobil 1 or the Pennzoil oils myself.

You notice that I am not attacking anybody personally. Why do other people have to launch personal attacks? Do they not have any counter arguments?

I've been seeing that for over a decade, but I really couldn't care if there was an inch of sludge/varnish whatever on every single surface, it's irrelevant to me. An engine that revs to 5,500+ insted of struggling to 4,000, not even half way to into my 7,500 mile/10,000km clean cycle, and has 12-15 psi compression increase, does it for me. It will only get better by the finish.

This tells me that the oil additive you are using does not remove sludge and varnish, then again some of these other oil additives might not remove varnish or sludge. As far as increasing compression, how many people buy an oil additive for increasing compression.

Someone might have a noisy engine which might mean a dirty or restricted lifter, maybe they have smoke blowing out there tailpipe, or they look inside the oil fill hole and see some grime.

If you are looking at increasing compression you can get that from Pennzoil Platinum, there is more than one way in skinning a cat. Your oil additive can increase compression, but Pennzoil Platinum can do it faster and of course, cheaper.

And the Pennzoil Platinum already meets the engine requirements and you don't have to also buy motor oil to put the Pennzoil Platinum in.
