Is it ok to use Fram if it's free?

Double of free is still free. Now where can I get Amsoil EAO for free?

FREE is always the #1 choice and I would go with a FRAM if I could get them for free, but I can't so I choose EAO.

I just happened to be at my local napa store today and was surprised to find out that their pro select filter for my caravan is only $3.44. I think that's a great price. After i use up all the free frams, i think i will stick with using pro select, it's made by wix and should be much better constructed compared to the cheapest fram which costs 5 bucks at krappytire. So, for someone who's in Canada, check out the napa proselect, you can't go wrong with wix made and such cheap price. I can get the luberfiner ecore design for even cheaper ($2.87) but that store is a bit further away from where i live, that's again another great filter at a great price, and people complain about Canada having higher prices on oil and oil filters, I got a nice stash of PYB 5L jugs from Walmart last year for only 8 bucks each, and each jug included a bottle of Pennzoil Mileage Improver.

MrBiglund, was that price on the CarQuest red or blue and what is the difference?

I'm getting so tired of paying $10 for the NAPA Golds, I'm concidering buying a Fram!...lol(under 5$ at Wallyworld).

Carquest Red=run of the mill Wix
Carquest Blue=comparable to Pro-Tec
I'm running a Carquest Red 81348 now :o

So a NAPA Gold is comparable to a Blue/Pro-Tec? Which would make the Red comparable to the ProSelect I guess, and this puts the NASCAR in the middle of the road?

nthach, is that 81348 on a Saturn? It seems that a Saturn should have a Silicone ADBV because of the filter orientation and it seems that is the Gold and Blue.

Does any of this matter as the Saturn gets done every 5000km?

I'm just questioning the logic of going out of my way and spending more money to get a Gold but have been concidering trying the Super Tech oil because of the prices,,,lol. This forum has caused me an obsession!! I blame it all on this place!!....LMAO I think I need help!

I wonder how the quality gets better now that it's free? If lousy at 4, loust at 3, lousy at 2, lousy at 1, and lousy if free.

Well, they work. I don't think anyone REALLY says that they don't do the job. They're just (typically) the worst value on the market. Free is always a great value.

NO!

Free or not, I'd use one only if it was the _only_ option. (Old filter devoured by dog and nothing but an old fram in the corner. Even then I'd remove the #%%# thing as soon as I could reach a parts store.) For 5 lousy bucks you cheapskates can buy something decent!

Look at the adjacent thread: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/fram-cut-open.101107/
and tell me you want something that is obviously built on the ragged edge of failure anywhere near your car. I've seen several similar pictures showing collapsed media, grossly leaking valves, etc. Google is full of stories about these things disintegrating and clogging the car's oil system, with disastrous results. And even if it doesn't cause immediate carmageddon, how effective do you think that cheap media is? Throw in a probably-leaking overpressure valve, and you may as well run no filter at all.

How much did you pay for your car? Is $5 THAT much money to spend every 8~10000 miles? IMO, even a freebie/beater car should be taken care of if you want a halfway reliable ride.

I guess all those MILLIONS of engines that have gone down the road (and still are) using Frams are just so lucky since you have the FACTS on Fram filters.

Amazing...

Read some threads and LEARN something.

Good for you Bill.
Enjoy the BIG $3 you're saving: You must be one [censored] of a cheapskate.

Having seen multiple pictures of them, both new and used, I think they look like [censored]. They are clearly built to a VERY low price point and appear, to me, to operate on the ragged edge of failure. When/if the cheezy filter media finally disintegrates, it WILL F-up your car.

Again, thanks for taking time to LEARN something than attack someone for telling the truth.

And if you spent ANY time learning instead of spouting you'd learn that I have not bought a Fram for over 6 years.

But that's ok. You know it all.

There is a lot of info here on this website. Too bad you don't want to learn.

Then maybe you'd make a post that had some facts.

Calm down Geonerd, no one is telling you to use Fram, and that adjacent thread you pointed to actually provides a pretty good used filter, i don't see any where in that thread that the pleats or endcaps got ruptured, or if there was any leak. I think that filter did a good job of holding up. The only thing is see that's not good is that the nitril adbv is a bit deformed, not that could of happened during the disection? or even though it's deformed, it could of still functioned alright, there are just too many variables, and it doesn't mean every Fram filer with a nitril adbv will have a deformed adbv, I've read many posts here where people have cut up their Fram filters and not have had a deformed nitrile adbv. And please show some respect for the senior members of this forum. (I don't mean senior in a wrong way).

I disagree with those that would use up the old Fram filters. I used Fram for years on my older Explorer and lost the engine bearings one day. I then learned that Fram filters are made with cardboard and plastic parts. Turns out the oil filter parts had broken loose and clogged the oil pick up screen. Now I don't put Fram anything in my cars for five minutes. It is not worth the risk for such a small investment in a better quality product. Buy the OE Mopar filter at Walmart for about $5.00. They are made by Purolator. Or buy a Purolator. There are many well made filters at a minimal price.

If this is the case you should contact FRAM and ask them to reimburse your engine replacement cost, and make this story public if they refuse to.
