Is is safe to hose off the engine?

depending on how well the engine bay is designed (you're on your own here...), most of the sensitive electronics ARE covered quite well, and some even have o-ring or other gasket type seals.

I have been quarter-car-washing engine bays for 30 years and have never had a significant issue other than a boatload of steam upon restart. My older cars with regular distributors (a 70 Olds/GM 350 2bbl as an example) often coughed a bit, but cleared up in a few seconds. THAT was a clue that the cap o-ring was shot and needed replacing, btw...

My wife's 70 Gremlin (yes, she bought it before we married, and yes, it was an ok car...) absolutely DIED when it SMELLED water, so I don't think I cleaned that engine too often. Besides I was in school at the time and we didn't keep the car long anyway....

Sometimes belts will squeal especially if they are old and somewhat slick. An older Chrysler once started squealing and never would shutup until a bit of belt dressing was applied, and them it never squeaked again, even after repeated washings. (we were on a roadtrip to FL, hit a skunk at night and I had to heavily wash the car and engine bay to reduce the "memories" as much as possible. the belt squealed for several hundred miles or so until I found an open parts store and some dressing)

I've never seen a need to clean fuse boxes or the innards of an alternator.....common sense is helpful on these things.

I use the low pressure setting, 1st with the "engine cleaner" (smells like simple green usually), then low pressure soap and then low pressure water rinse. I don't force it into places I shouldn't and just generally use common sense. I concentrate on "back-flushing" the radiator and AC coil, the front of the block and the firewall and other places that gunk accumulates along with valve covers, etc.

It just makes a car much easier to work on, and problems easier to spot.
 
Not a smart thing! Never wash a hot motor at a coin operated car wash! You will distort the mating surfaces of parts from rapid contraction. Its not an issue you want to deal with, trust me on this.

A normal garden hose with 10% dawn in a spray bottle will do wonders. Use a toothbrush to scrub. Spray the motor with the FAN pattern on the nozzle. After the rinse immediately start engine and allow to warm for 5 minutes. You will then take vehicle for a 15 minute run to dissipate any remaining moisture.

When the engine has cooled liberally add your favorite dressing such as silicone, etc.. to all parts of the motor. Be careful not to spray the belts with the dressing. I use 2001 Super protectant since it works good and last a long time.

so, uhm, why is a garden hose any different???

it would be nice if this old wives' tale would die, but alas, the web will keep it around forever. Ask a real mechanical engineer about yield/stress/quench points and you'll find out why. Unless the parts are practically glowing hot, you haven't reached a temperature sufficient to cause any warpage/fractures/etc.

BTW, do you not drive your car in the rain? Guess what? It gets wet under the hood!! Surprise!

I even had one bozo claim it shattered his exhaust mainfold.....

science is such a drag.

It was a 850 Volvo with the 2.4L I-5. Water gets right past the "Volvo" emblazoned spark plug cover, down into the wells, and causes a no start condition until the water is removed or dries up...

I called a dealership today, said it's fine. Your right too, I thought about it later but after I drive in the heavy rain on the highway and open the hood, the engine is dirty as **** . It gets wet. As long as you don't shoot water into the intake or directly/forcefully into critical areas your fine. Sensors will fail from everyday moisture anyway regardless of hosing them off IMO.

Its not a old wifes tail its real world stuff! Never spray water on a hot motor that is not running. You think your exhaust manifold is not hot after you drive the vehicle???? What about a hot turbo housing? How about a high pressure diesel fuel pump?

Lets do a little non scientific analysis. Take your hot pan from the burner and place it under cool water. What happens?

An effective and safe way to keep a motor clean is with a cool motor and a little elbow grease.

The motor is running when the rain water hits it. Thats the difference.

Here is another analogy. Take a engine that is hot, overheated from loss of coolant. Would you add coolant/water directly to the block without the motor running? If you did add the water to the block without the engine running what do you think would happen?

it makes steam. If it is RED-HOT, it might warp.

Show me a functioning part that is RED-HOT on the exterior under your hood. And show me how you DUNK it under water.

Most of those high pressure carwash sprayers are only high pressure when whatever you're spraying is within a few inches of them. Once you get a couple of feet away, it's a fine mist of water, unlikely to cool anything quickly enough to damage it.

Ever used a frying pan that has a concave bottom (like the beginnings of a Wok)? Wobbles on the burner because of the center is domed lower than the sides?
Thats from cooling down the pan too fast in the sink with water and distortes the pan, and thats not from red hot temps either.

Your right! Those high pressure carwash sprayers are not strong unless your right at where the water comes out. They are actually weak a few inches away. Every car I had gets soaked when it rains hard.

4 more dealers said it's fine.

You just have to use common sense when doing it.
 
Since the engine is running the heat is maintained internally at a constant temperature. You shut the engine off and allow these components to be washed with cool water and see what results you get from rapid contraction.

Its very simple metal 101 that you should have learned in school! I gave you the frying pan immersed in cool water to make it very simplistic. And no the pan does not have to be red hot...

So what makes the difference between engine internals and externals when it comes to cooling metal with liquids? NONE!!!

Buster,

Keep doing it then bud! It cost me $750 in repairs to a vehicle since the high pressure pump was distorted from.....you guessed it! I prefer to learn from my mistakes if you want to find out on your own then go right ahead. Its not gonna cost me a cent! I am just trying to prevent folks from making the same STUPID mistake.

Amkeer, guess what, the corolla was hosed down several times. NO Problems. I asked the question assuming it was ok but the Ram has more computer sensors then the Toyota.

I never said it was a problem washing the engine. I do it frequently with a COOL or SLIGHTLY WARM engine. The problem arises when you drive to a coin operated car wash with the engine HOT and wash it down!

I am familiar with Autopia, I am a member. Good advice there as well as the links I provided. All say the same thing, "engine cool to the touch". This would be cool enough that if you follow their advice you be able to stick your hand in the engine bay to secure plastic baggies.

I would be sitting at a coin operated car wash a long time to get my engine temps down to those temperatures.
 
I'm going to say this one more time and then ignore this thread:

IT WILL NOT HURT ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS RED-HOT.

I have been doing this for over 30 years with cast iron and aluminum block engines: GM, Chrysler, Toyota and Honda.

I even went so far as to confirm this with several of our DEGREED MECHANICAL ENGINEERS at work. THEY ALL LAUGHED.

sometimes people absolutely amaze me.
