Is H727 $50 better than Altimax RT?

Hi. Advice sought. Thanks.

Gonna order tires for the lady friend's 2003 Ford Taurus SES tomorrow from DTD. Total of three rebates is too good to pass up; car needs at least two tires---and a set of four would be better---before winter.

Choices are: Hankook Optimo H727 in 205/65/16, at $259 after all rebates; or General Altimax RT in 215/60/16, at $209 after rebates.

Both are 94T standard touring all-seasons, SL.

I have the H727 on my Saturn and so far, after nine months, they are great. I lean toward the Hankook, on personal experience and reviews--especially of treadwear and winter traction. (We ive in eastern PA, between the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos. Winters are not 'that' fierce, but bad weather can pop up out of nowhere.)

OTOH, $50 is $50. Anyone run Altimax RTs on a Taurus or similar ride---especially in a climate with some winter driving fun?

I'd say yes. to the h727

im seeing 75+50+30

off 91x4(+tax)

or about

364+tax -155$
at 7% tax thats roughly
389-155$

or 234$ add in mount and balance at roughly 60$

~~300 out the door


hankooks look like

404+tax -$145 in rebates

or 433-145

287+60= ~~350$

The cs4 touring is also very attractively priced with

165$ in rebates if that interests you.
They have T H & V ratings available

nearly the same price as the h727's
there is literally 1-3$ difference per tire between the speed ratings.

T rating works out to be

100x4
400+tax= 428 -165$ in rebates

263+ 60 mount and balance

out the door

~~325$

add 4$ for H rated cs4
Add 12$ for V rated cs4


Personally if it was a grandma car I'd go for the hankooks

if the person likes to drive abit more spirited

the H or V rated cs4's

Thanks. Good research! Tax? When I ordered from DTD-eBay last November, there was no tax. Has that changed in the new e-commerce laws since then?

Not quite a grandma-mobile and she does not quite drive like a grandma---but leaning that way in both cases. Snow tires are not an option this year, so the winter traction edge will likely swing me to the H727.

Only reason I would consider Cooper CS4 is the made-in-USA factor. They are still made here, right?

I had cheezy walmart douglas tires on a taurus a few years back and it stuck great with those. I didn't take it past 9/10 but the alignment settings and suspension setup make the most from what was there.

Neither would fail you, get the altimaxes I guess.

The reviews are too good on the H727's to pass them up. We have 4 cars(all different) in our circle of family/friends that have the H727's all with similar reviews:
Vehicles from...economy car, sedans, minivans and small CUV

They're worth the extra $50 especially in the ICE that is experienced in PA.

You wouldn't be making a mistake buying the RT's but, the H727 do have an edge in the winter foul weather area. And, no one in our circle has ever complained about a MPG penality!

Again, I like Genreal so, if you/she gets the RT's it's not a mistake

I just introduced my BIL(215-45-17) to AltiMAX HP in another thread in this section but, there aren't as many tires available in his size from DTD except the Conti EC DWS that I would have recomended to him(snow/ice is important). I recomended the Continental Extreme Contact DWS's 1st & the General AlitMAX HP's 2nd...He went of the HP's for a $130 overall difference in savings.

I sell tires for a living. My experience is the hankook are going to last longer. However, if they start to wear uneven due to rotations, alignments, struts etc they get noisy. Overall they are a better tire than the generals

Thanks for all the advice. I went with the Hankook H727.

I am not a Hankook fanboy and would prefer USA-made, all else equal---but to me it looks like the H727 on sale with multiple rebates is the best dollar-for-dollar tire you can get right now for normal use in a climate where winter plays a role. Only a few choices---like the Generals here---are even close.

Now, if $$$ were not a factor....

its respectable.

DTD charged me shipping It might be because they have a presence in ohio.

I usually call and make them pricematch tirerack who does not have tax.

No question go with the H727's. The Altimax RT is a lousy tire. My Brother had a set on his car and they were awful. Especially in the rain and snow.

EDIT - ooops. I see you already did. Good choice.

I've only been charged ONCE for shipping from DTD. I was actually in AZ(one of distribution centers) when ordered a set of tires. I was visiting my daughter at ASU and hoped I would make it back to NY before the tires(I did!).

When I got home, I checked online again and the shipping charges were gone off of their site...Hmmmm! I called DTD and they would not credit me but, they did on my next set of tires(through the price of the tires) and I was happy

I have not yet been charged NY State tax for online tire purchaces though, I know it's coming. I have been charged NY State tax on some(though few) online purchaces from certain sites(non tire sites).
