Is Fram Extra Guard (PH7317) any good?

For $6.97 Cdn at WM, it has what seems to be a silicone ATDBV which the Subaru OE filter doesn't have.
Not much choice in Canada and OE filter is twice the price.
This is for 1 year / 10000 km (6-7000 miles) OCI on my '20 Legacy 2.5L.
I haven't used a Fram filter since joining BITOG some 15 years ago...
With a $14.37 jug of 0W-20 Super Tech, that would be a heck of a cheap OCI...

I used to use them on my Honda's, no issues.
I currently have a cartridge version on my 4Runner. I don't see any issues with these either. The 4Runner didn't burn a single drop of Havoline 0w20 (Walmart 6 quart box) over 3100 miles out West and back, and I would imagine the filter is doing just fine.

I actually have this filter in our Outback right now for an OCI. We were busy and I didn't want to go to subaru for a filter. I have no idea really what's happening in there but there's no extra start up clatter and the oil pressure light goes off fast. For the summer I'm fine with it. Winter not so much. The Outback forum says Subaru is using a higher volume oil pump than most vehicles, so to run cheap cellulose filter media they spec a high bypass pressure which forces the oil through the filter for colder starts without going into bypass. I suspect in the winter the extra guard may go into bypass with every cold start though. With a fram synthetic media filter that flows more easily, those filters may not go into bypass even with a lower pressure spec in the winter.
I don't think the blue subaru filters are really all that much though as they are nothing special, just basically a cheap filter that has a higher bypass pressure. The ones from Japan are supposed be very good, for the WRX, but I've never got one.

OCODs or Supertech filters are just fine, if it'll fit may try stepping up to the PH3593A.

Just run it and sleep well at night. I believe the oci for Subaru is 6k? That’s well within its capability. It’s less about the filter and more about changing the oil and filter on time! All the orange frams people trash on were ran for way longer than they’re built for. Fram extraguard is as efficient as the standard wix filter at a third of the cost

Your car is still under warranty. If I were you I'd look at what Rockauto has and order 4-6 filters at a time to save shipping costs per unit. I order 4-6 Fram Ultras for both my vehicles and I leave them on for 3-4 oil changes.

Subaru factory filter has a very high bypass setting, something like 20psi vs 12psi. Whether this amounts to a hill of beans or not is a subject of great debate.

ETA: Nothing at all wrong with a PH7317.

I've used one of these extraguards for 9k accidently on the odyssey, the oil was changed in 2014 and then changed in early 2020.
No complaints, yes it may not look as better built like fram ultra, but these filters can definetly go up to 5 to 6k oci's.
I may have gotten lucky.

they really are good filters for the money. I don't know if I would run it in the jetta or camrys, but the odyssey, only fram extra guards were used when my dad changed the oil on it, after that I started using mobil filters, only because I couldn't find the fram filter size at the walmart.

Why pay more for other filters when fram stuff works just as well, yes they did have problems in the past but now they really dont.

If you were ever in a bind over that again, you could use (using Fram #s) a 3593A, 6607, or 7317.
