Fram Extended Guard

Hi everyone. Today I found some older Fram Extended Guards on clearance at Walmart for $2 a piece. There was only one size and it happens to fit my mom's Camry. I wouldn't be surprised if they are from the 90s. The boxes are faded and 3 of the 8 I bought are banged up and need to be returned. Should have removed the cellophane wrapper at the store to check them. The box says made in USA but there are descriptions in French in addition to English. It also advertises "Triad Fibre Technology". Any clue what era these are from?

So my question is can these filters be run for 10k ocis? The box says 11,000 km . Must have been meant for Canada. Please no Fram bashing posts. I've been on this board long enough to know that Fram filters are kind of mediocre at msrp, but I've also been here long enough to know they won't make the engine go kaput. $2 for a filter these days is a bargain. Thanks in advance for all useful replies.

Fram Extended Guard filters are top notch, way ahead of the regular orange can and tough guard. They have semi-synthetic media and compare well to Mobil 1, WIX, Purolator PureOne, Bosch, and other top notch filters. 10k mile OCI's are fine for these filters and can be accomplished without any problems. Buy as many as you can because for $2 they are a steal.

I wouldn't run them that long (10K Miles = 16,000KM). And most of the world is on the Metric system (KM), so it could have been for Britian or somewhere else and not just for us...

LOL. Well it will be between 7.5k-10k. Haven't decided yet. Changing the oil on my mom's car every 5k is getting annoying because my sister puts those 5k on quick. Did 4 oil changes on that car last year. Switch it to syn and a good filter and running it on a longer oci.

Majority of Brits don't read French and this filter is speced for Fords.

I would use a Wix or Napa Gold or M1 instead of a FRAM for this long of an OCI. I just wouldn't trust them this long.

The Extended Guard is a stout filter not at all comparable to their other oil filter offerings. These things are top notch. There are pictures on here posted and it is not at all made any cheaper than WIX, Mobil 1 and PureOne filters. Maybe I'll dig up a link.

I believe you but I wouldn't touch them. IMO they aren't up to the task like the other brands and aren't good value for the money if full price is paid, but will last and do a reasonable job for the mileage I said above.

If they are from the 90s, I'd be worried about that the filter media has turned to dust.

I don't know if they are that old. The boxes certainly look like they've been sitting for a while. From what I can see they look usable. On the top of the box it says "free inside oil change window sticker". Still interested if anyone has a ball park estimate of how old these are.

Agreed. I'm the first to bash Fram for the substandard oil filters they put out. But I would indeed put that filter on my car. It's a quality product:

I agree, if they are 2 dollars take one and cut it open and it should give you a good idea how the others are.

Sorry I will not tear apart a perfectly usable item. Took an extended guard off the Maxi though. If my dad didn't throw it away I might hack that up but the shell is messed up from me trying to take it off.

When you bought the Maxima, the previous owner used Fram Extended Guard for oil changes? If that's the case, he probably took pretty good care of it, judging by the quality filter.

I have to agree that you wouldn't even know that this filter is made by the same company that makes all that other junk. It's as well made as any filter on the market and its internal components (media, end caps, ADBV) bear a very striking resemblance to Amsoil's EaO filter line, suggesting to me the possibility that the innards are actually made for Fram by Donaldson and sent to Fram for "canning". If anyone has any information on this please weigh in as I'm very curious. Now that these filters are competitively priced at my local Walmart for $7.97 I will be using them fron now on. Very well made and durable filter, any doubters please cut one open and you'll be very surprised.

That's the filter I took off so hopefully that's the case. It went through a few owners though. I realized after purchasing it that it was repoed from the last owner sometime in May of 2008. Now I'm hoping that after I get the minor issues fixed that it will be trouble free. One thing is funny, the car was sold from a dealer in MN but has always had a FL registration with the first being registered to a rental agency. Do rental agencies buy cars from other states to rent out? Sorry off topic.
