I am not surprised your VQ40 runs great on the 40 weight oil It seems everyone I have either talked to or posted on a forum running a 40 says there Nissan V6 runs better. Frankly I think a good 0w40 or 5w40 synthetic is perfect for the VQ. I am going to try Shell T6 5w40 next time.
Let us know how it starts in the real cold this winter and how much start up noise it makes. No one has confirmed it but I really think that start up clatter the VQ40 V6 makes is that big timing chain moving on start up and the lack of lubrication for a second the chain has.
