Is Castrol 0w-40 safe to use?

I am not surprised your VQ40 runs great on the 40 weight oil It seems everyone I have either talked to or posted on a forum running a 40 says there Nissan V6 runs better. Frankly I think a good 0w40 or 5w40 synthetic is perfect for the VQ. I am going to try Shell T6 5w40 next time.

Let us know how it starts in the real cold this winter and how much start up noise it makes. No one has confirmed it but I really think that start up clatter the VQ40 V6 makes is that big timing chain moving on start up and the lack of lubrication for a second the chain has.

I've both Mobil 1 & Castrol Edge both in 0w40 in my wife's VQ40DE Xterras for years with 0 issues. It's a great year round oil and will perform great in this engine at 5k mile intervals.

which is funny because the owners manual on my truck (2014 SV) reccomends a 5w-30 CONVENTIONAL at 3750 OCI

Why not use GC 0W-30? It's on the heavier side of a 30wt as is, so I'd imagine 0W-40 would be similar. I don't think it would harm anything, just your gas mileage.

I don't totally disagree with the premise of a 0w40 or 5w40 do run well in the Nissan VQ 3.5 motors. But I have run Castrol 5w30 extended performance, Havoline Pro DS 5w30, Pennzoil Ultra 5w30, and Castrol Magnatec 5w30 in my VQ with zero motor noise. A 30 grade operating viscosity does run just fine in the VQ motors as well.

Again a 0w40 and a 5w40 sure can and do run very well in these motors. I have run Pennzoil 5w40 in my 3.5 which ran just fine. I agree with trying out Castrol 0w30 as well.... I got 10 quarts ready to go in at some point as well.

On my shelf I have Mobil 1 0W40 and Castrol Magnatec 5w30 I am torn on what grade and oil I want to run this winter?

Yes, but why not check Wallymart for an equivalent Mobil 1 or Penn Ultra on special. It's also worth checking for an 0w30 or the right API spec.

Well Camprunner it really could be done either way really. The Castrol Magnatec would be fine up to -30°C or -22°F as well. Now if you live in the far northwest corner of MA in a valley in the Berkshires it could get colder than that. I believe that the Castrol Magnatec would be all right all the way down to -35°C . At or below that temp I would consider the Mobil 1 0w40 or Castrol 0w30.

Yes I am in the Berkshires and it gets much colder then the other part of the state (Boston area) and stays colder for longer periods. bbhero if I understand your comments correctly you feel the M1 0W40 will flow a little better say at -20F then the 5w30 Castrol Magnatec?

At -20°F the Mobil 1 0w40 would probably flow a bit better than the 5w30 Castrol Magnatec. But it would not likely be a enough of a difference to really notice at all. The MRV test results would be helpful in further determining this out. But Castrol doesn't really give much of a good answer to this per their PDS. I really think that the Castrol Magnatec would be fine all the way down to -30°F. Any lower than that I think it's time for a 0w30 or 0w40. Of course this is given that's this is an overnight start, outside, with no block heater. A block heater applied or in a garage that's attached directly to a house with some heat input from the house and a 5w would obviously be just fine.

My lady and I have thought about moving to northern Vermont or above Burlington. Up there -30°F could certainly happen at times.

I can never tell the difference, except Delvac 1 ESP is very well priced here, and that works best for me.

Nickdfresh: I'm not a good judge about pizza. Just like I can't tell the difference in oils by sound, as long as there's something resembling bread, cheese, and pizza sauce, I'll probably gladly eat the thing.
