So my trucks engine (VQ-40DE) calls for API SN 5w-30, would Castrol Syntec 0w-40 (german castrol) be safe to use? also, i cant find anything labeled castrol syntec anymore, its all edge, is there a difference there?

Yes, but why not check Wallymart for an equivalent Mobil 1 or Penn Ultra on special. It's also worth checking for an 0w30 or the right API spec.

I use Mobil 1 0w40 in my VQ40DE V6 and it runs fantastic! I also talked to a guy the other day that has a Nissan Frontier with the same motor that runs only Valvoline 10w40 and his runs great so don't worry about it.

+1
Good call from "across the pond"

It would be OK, but slight overkill.
Try to find Castrol 0W30 on sale in NAPA or somewhere else. It is same formula just little thinner.

Whether it runs fantastic or not you're supposed to be using 5W-30. You're breaking the rules.

I believe you're right since that would be among the recommended grades for just about anything outside of this country.
If I lived in a land where I could put my foot down on the '12 Accord and maintain the 200 kph the car is easily capable of for any length of time, I doubt that the 0W-20 recommended here would be much good while a 0W-40 would be perfect.
Here, I've had the car over the ton only briefly since I have no real desire to spend a night in jail.
If 0W-40 is safe elsewhere, it's safe here.

I'm breaking the rules, too, with my G37. Want to make something out of it?

Your showing your love for ILSAC stuff again, Merk.

NissanHauler: It will be fine. One does have to be cautious if under warranty, though I went out of spec during warranty. Your choice is probably as cost effective as any other main line synthetic out there, and better than those that are only available in one quart bottles. Personally, I'd have no concern running any of the A3/B4 options, but Delvac 1, also technically out of spec, is one of the cheapest options I can find, even rivalling a lot of conventionals when it comes to cost, at least for me here.

Garak, I saw a G37 delivering Dominos Pizza the other day. It wasn't a run down G37 either; it was a nice one. I couldn't believe it.

In my VW CC and Tiguan M1 0W40 always had much more starting noise then Castrol 0W30/40. Actually with Castrol 0W30/40 it does not matter what temperature is, it just starts normally. Old version of M1 0W40 had some serious noise once temperature drops below 10.

Not sure Dominos qualifies as pizza...

---UPDATE---
I've done the oil change, Purolator Boss filter and Castrol Edge w/ Titanium 0w-40 (the one with "formerly syntec on the back") MADE IN GERMANY, runs great, startup noise is down and surprisingly my temp gauge is lower

I'm using EDGE 0w40 in a 14+ year old Bolens powered push mower and its cleaning all kinds of [censored] out of the engine and doesn't use a drop of oil
