If you watch Houston TV stations like I do every night, they cover the Texans (and DeShawn Watson) quite a bit. Easy to understand. You sure know a lot about the NFL considering you "gave up" on it....![]()
They hafta have financial mouth pieces. Not all of them think in terms of generational wealth.
Very hard to plan for the future when many NFL players have an education of a 10th grader.
Sad but true.
If he can't play or chooses not to play ?if he can't play again
If he chooses not to play after being medically cleared he forfeits around $124M. It's the remaining portion of his guarantee. If he can't play or chooses not to play ?
Sure but the term "generational wealth" is in minds of many of these professional athletes who are in the position to receive huge paydays. Whether they get there is not the same as aspiring to get there.Even a star player's NFL salary is not enough money to become rich like Rockefeller, by orders of magnitude.
The NFL has for the better part of 20 yrs had support system for player finances if they want it. It's part of their orientation their rookie year. Not all of them think in terms of generational wealth.

I think the problem is if he retires he doesn't get any of it. He has been the meal ticket for his family for some time now and I'm sure the pressure is weighing on him. Concussions become easier to receive the more often you have them and the damage becomes progressively worse every time.

Spot on.
A few years back a couple of our road deputies had a car chase with what turned out to be an active, although not well known, NFL player that played for UGA. Nice guy, just made a bad choice. We got to talking to him and he admitted that leaving college and entering the NFL was probably the worst choice he'd ever made in his life. He'd gotten a sign on bonus of 10 mil and had absolutely nothing to show for it. His family and friends had talked him out of some, he'd blown the rest. He said there's absolutely no support for kids coming in as far as planning and what life is like with that sort of windfall. Very similar, I expect, as to what sudden lottery winners go through.
-Edit- Found it
He didn't mention anything about NFL's counseling.
Funny aside, I do remember when he came in the back door I thought 'Ohh crap, I hope we don't have to fight this monster...its going to hurt a LOT' (6'8" 350 pounds)

Every doctor in the world will tell him to stop playing except for doctors hired by the team.If he chooses not to play after being medically cleared he forfeits around $124M. It's the remaining portion of his guarantee.
Yeap but that's all the NFL can do though, is "advise". They can't stop a player's spending habits. It's all on them. The NFL has for the better part of 20 yrs had support system for player finances if they want it. It's part of their orientation their rookie year.
I believe if they don't clear him then they have to pay him.Every doctor in the world will tell him to stop playing except for doctors hired by the team.
Well of course but the resources are there. Not everyone is going to take advantage of just like the rest of the working population.Yeap but that's all the NFL can do though, is "advise". They can't stop a player's spending habits. It's all on them.
