iPhones, Face Recognition and Apple Wallet

For the longest time I had my iPhone 13 turn on without needing a passcode or Face ID. Now that I use Apple Wallet I have to have Face ID enabled.

This is annoying when the phone is in its dash mounted holder and I need to turn on an app like Google Maps. The phone is too far away for Face ID. I don't want to pick up the phone even if it is safe to do so, say, at a red light, because I could get a ticket.

Any solution to this?

Stop using Apple Wallet.

Seriously, your phone can replace your credit card(s) and you want ZERO security on the phone. Not gonna happen.... My phone has no issues with Face ID when mounted in my car mount. It doesn't need to be 12" away, it's quite good and powerful.

I want the security but also would like to turn on my phone while driving. Touch ID would have worked but apparently Touch ID was eliminated when Face ID was enabled on iPhones.

I use Apple Wallet for everything, and I haven't had any particular issue with face recognition at a sale terminal. I sort of agree that the old fingerprint thing was convenient for Wallet, but still it seems to work fine for me. Perhaps try re-training face recognition? Has your face changed recently? Beard? Glasses?

Why not have it default to your passcode? If it doesn’t recognize your face I’m pretty sure it already does doesn’t it?
I understand what you’re saying because it happens to me all the time in my truck so I punch in my passcode

What do you mean touch ID? You can still use your passcode if it doesn’t recognize your face.

I love Apple wallet, I don’t use cash. I always pay with my phone or if I leave my phone in the car I pay with my Apple Watch.

You could try turning this off under settings> assessability> face

iPhone 8 and older - using the round "home" button that reads your finger or thumb print.
You can still use your passcode if it doesn’t recognize your face.
It usually takes 2+ failures before it offers the passcode option, I think. If it doesn't recognize your face, it tries a 2nd time, I'm certain.

Happens to me all the time, but I can’t remember the sequence of events. I’ll pay attention next time.😜

Oh … that’s an old iPhone … I wonder if the SE still has touch?

That’s the one thing that I miss on iPhones is a fingerprint reader

The OP's phone is on, but the screen is locked. To unlock the screen, once you set up Apple Wallet, you must use Face ID for security.

You'll have to use Face ID. There's simply no way around it.
OK, chances are I’m talking about something different and a different phone

I have an iPhone 13
I just turned the screen off
Then pointed the phone away from my head, swiped up and on the screen, it says Face ID
When it didn’t see my face almost immediately the keyboard comes up to punch in my passcode
This all happens within a matter of a second or two so I don’t understand, we’re probably talking about an old iphone or something

so the screen wont stay unlocked(after initial unlock) if its plugged in and on a car mount?

My phone won't stay unlocked. Once it turns off after a minute to save battery life, it needs either passcode or Face ID to unlock. I don't plug in my phone in the truck.

My issue is that the phone is mounted somewhat away from me. I will post a pic. I will have to shift the mount to get the phone closer so that either Face ID works or I can enter my passcode..

You could keep your phone unlocked by changing the settings. You have an option of 1 to 5 minutes or never.
Settings> display & brightness > auto lock

Let me know I’m curious if this is what you were talking about. This is where you can change it

Once tapping autolock, you have a menu of when you want the phone to automatically lock or never

so this is starting to sound like partial user error operating as intended?(by apple)

I guess I assumed navigation use etc. If I plug my phone in with navigation on the screen stays on.

I changed the auto-lock settings to NEVER. Not sure what is going to happen now. Does the phone turn off after a period of non-use to save battery life? Does the phone stay unlocked even after turning off?

Here are pics of the phone mount. Where the mount is now, it cannot be swivelled any closer to the driver because of the shifter. The phone does not face me directly. I am considering moving the mount under the steering wheel, as marked by the red arrow.
I don't want to mount it on top of the dash in order to not obstruct the view through the windshield.

SE still has the button. My fingerprint reader would never consistently work. It seemed to lose the print all the time. Same on my Mac. I do like the face recognition. I am always streaming music in the car so can open other apps with going through that.
