it changed all the alert sounds without asking, such as my camera notifications, not sure i love that.

I was running the beta, they really polished the CarPlay interface, that was one of the biggest differences I noticed over 16.x.x, along with the changes to the phone app and the ability to just play voicemails.

I haven't tried CarPlay yet since updating. I don't notice too much different yet. I use CarPlay a lot so I'll definitely check through that next time I'm in the car.

There hasn't been a paid update for a Mac operating system update since OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) in 2012. Even then, none of their physical disc updates required an unlock key like Windows does. It was all on the honor system. There were also weird ones like 10.6 (Snow Leopard) which only sold for $29, but came with odd licensing terms that said they could only be used to upgrade from 10.5 (Leopard) even though they would work to directly upgrade from previous versions. But again - there was no enforcement mechanism.

Eighteen years ago, the tech industry's dominant company made nearly half its revenue selling OS licenses. Now, as Apple just confirmed, the prices of OS licenses are headed towards zilch.

If you have a 12 Pro, I’d personally wait a few days for 17.0.1.

One of my iPhone 13 Pros and our iPad Pro M2 took the update just fine. Our iPhone 12 Pro froze on the initial reboot with the screen off. I let it sit for 20 minutes and you could feel the processor heating up through the back of the phone. Something was clearly wrong so I decided to play it risky and did a hard reset of the phone mid update. She woke right back up and took the update like nothing had gone wrong.

I had that happen with one of the 16.x updates on my 12pro… and my wife’s 12.

A big thing is Apple Maps update. Now, like Google Maps, you can download map data in case you drive into areas without phone signal.

Meaningless until their routing gets significantly better. Apple Maps has always been so far behind in this regard.

I can guess not recently. It's amazingly good now. Actually much prefer it over google maps now.
They recently, like, two weeks ago, drastically re-did an intersection in our semi-rural area. Completely changed the traffic flow so you can no longer cross over the road but have to merge right, then down the road go to a left turn around to he'd the other way. I could not believe it but somehow, it's already on Apple Maps.
Much pin point accuracy even going to new stores in our rapidly growing area.

Yep. I think this was a problem a decade ago.

We may need to agree to disagree. I don’t think it works well. Maybe it depends on where you are.

I use mostly Apple maps. Sometimes I'll use Waze, only for the peer-to-peer reporting of traffic conditions and cops. Apple has some reporting, but not nearly to the level of Waze.

Google Maps, basically use Waze reports for traffic reports, especially since Google purchased Waze

Apple Maps also has much higher resolution satellite imaging of places. When it first came out, it was hot garbage, but it's my go-to now, don't use Google Maps at all anymore.

Last I used Apple Maps for routing, it go so confused in a state park that I had to turn it off. I find it struggles with lane position and the timing of alerts for turns.

I just jumped into Apple Maps again and was immediately disappointed:

• The map opened so zoomed in to my location there was no basemap display, just my location dot with a uniform checkered background. Only after zooming out did I see the basemap.
• I clicked on my local Floyds 99 I can easily book through Google maps. No ability to book through the app.
• I dropped a pin and attempted to save it. No ability to “favorite” dropped pins to your own categories.

The location accuracy does seem good, as well as general responsiveness. I’ll give it that.

One thing I have noticed is that Safari is definitely snappier but on certain webpages with graphics or gifs it stutters as it is loading them. A minor quirk and it will probably be covered in the update that usually happens shortly after a release.
