I’m trying to understand if you have iOS 17?
Maybe that was the purpose of your reply, because there is no charge limit of 80% which I just found out because my wife updated to version 17.0.1.

I was under the assumption that with iOS 17, you could limit battery charging to 80%

However, after downloading it on my wife’s iPhone 13 I can see that it’s not an option

Kind of disappointing since this is available on the iPhone 15 so I’m trying to understand if anybody had any success with a phone before iPhone 15

It looks like that was consolidated into the Optimized Charging function.

Apparently there are some (app based) tools that can be used to limit charge state that work with a power blocker that attaches to USB, but they're not ideal to keep it stable. Ideally there would be some way to just keep the power coming in to supply the active power needs for the device but where the charge circuitry stops charging the battery. Simply removing power going into the device doesn't do that.

Some laptop computers do that. My Lenovo PC has a mode for maximum battery longevity that reduces the state of charge range, but where it will still take in power for active use even when the battery isn't being charged.

I’m not understanding, I assume you looked with your updated version.
There should be a tab that cuts off charging at 80%
The optimize charging charges to 100% it just figures out what time you usually pick up your phone in the morning and saves the last 20% for right before that time

I understand what you’re saying, but as of right now, the iPhone 15 you could select not to exceed 80% charge
So I thought reasonable to expect with the new iOS 17 that this function would be available on pre-iPhone 15’s
That may come true with further version updates I don’t know

I just read an incorrect article from one of the online sources that led me to believe iOS 17 will enable this on pre-iPhone 15’s, which obviously it has not.
Disappointed only because of my own misinformation hopefully it comes about

I have the same scenario as Pimtac, both on my 13 and on my wife’s 13

What scenario are you talking about?
Do you have the ability to flip a tab on the screen cutting off charging past 80%?

I reread his post. Correct that is optimized charging on all iPhones. It is not the new iPhone 15 cut off for charging at 80%.

No I do not. Per apple website and google searches it says basically the phone learns it through the optimized charging feature

You are correct you do not have the new iPhone 15 feature
I updated my post above this one what you have is on all iPhones previous to iPhone 15.

The iPhone 15 has a new feature which allows you not to charge past 80% which further increases the life of your battery .
This is what the iPhone 15 screen looks like which I previously posted.

So to clarify, only if you have an iPhone 15 is there a tab that says “80% limit”

Sorry - I hadn't previously heard about 80% limit. If that's done, I can almost guarantee that the battery is likely to last for 5+ years. And that could be supplemented with a USB power bank (and I usually have one with me), so the power bank takes the degradation hit and can be replaced for less than the cost of a phone battery replacement.

The Lenovo mechanism uses a slider for different levels of battery longevity settings. I think the most extreme limits it to between 25-75%.

Yeah, this would really be a game changer in battery life and it’s available on the 15 right now, I suspect future updates will make it available for previous iPhones but what do I know maybe not

As previously posted, this would be an iPhone 15 option list
  • Open Settings
  • Tap Battery
  • Tap Battery Health & Charging
  • Tap Charging Optimization
  • Tap '80% Limit'

I’m all over the place with my charging. I want the 80% cutoff instead of the optimized charging feature for my 13 Pro Max. I don’t understand why it wasn’t rolled out to more phones.

I also find it odd that 16.7 and 17.0.1 were options for my phone, but my old iPad is stuck at 16.6.1. I’m still hoping for security updates. Even though it’s slow i still love the magic keyboard for laptop use when it’s hot out.

I looked into it, and Apple says that it may occasionally force a charge to 100% in order to help calculate a more accurate capacity estimate. Displayed capacity is obviously an estimate, where I've heard of it going up and down.

Also - the article indicates that if plugged in, it should go between 75-80% with the 80% setting while plugged in. This isn't much different than the way Macs did it previously, where it displays between 95-100% when plugged in and then attempts to top off periodically. Current iPhones/iPads/Macs do that, but they display 100% during that period, even though it may actually be between 94-100%. I've used coconutBattery, which will show the actual state of charge level.

About 80% Limit with iPhone 15 models

With iPhone 15 models, you can choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None.
When you choose 80% Limit, your iPhone will charge up to about 80 percent and then stop charging. If the battery charge level gets down to 75 percent, charging will resume until your battery charge level reaches about 80 percent again.
With 80% Limit enabled, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.

When was the last time you used Apple Maps?

I can guess not recently. It's amazingly good now. Actually much prefer it over google maps now.
They recently, like, two weeks ago, drastically re-did an intersection in our semi-rural area. Completely changed the traffic flow so you can no longer cross over the road but have to merge right, then down the road go to a left turn around to he'd the other way. I could not believe it but somehow, it's already on Apple Maps.
Much pin point accuracy even going to new stores in our rapidly growing area.
I stopped using apple maps in Houston because it screws at times. Usually on 610. Maps has been bulletproof.

Unlikely, but one possibility could be a feature that's only done in hardware/firmware for the charging circuitry.

I've got an older iPad mini 4 that updated to iPadOS 15.7.9. And an iPhone 7 that just got iOS 15.7.9. If your device is on iOS/iPadOS 16, it should have the latest updates enabled. But there are some oddball builds out there. iOS 17.0.2 is only for iPhone 15 models. If there's an incremental update again, I'm thinking it could be 17.0.3 and 17.0.4 if they want to maintain separate update numbers.

Yes, I found the article.
It's called battery limiter and available only on iPhone 15. It does not come with the iOS 17 update for older phones.

Bottom Line is with iPhone 15 you can limit charge to 80%, you cant not do this with other earlier iPhones at this time. Disappointed but maybe one day you will be able too, maybe not.
(I know you know this, typing it for the others I had a conversation with) @PimTac @grisby (which has already seen it but might find the linked article interesting) My wife who always tries to stop her 13 from charging at 80% by disconnecting the charger downloaded the update with the expectation she would be able to have the phone do it for her (after I told her about it) but its no go, unless you have the 15

"At this time, the built-in charge limiter is restricted to the iPhone 15 series. If the feature is entirely software-based, Apple may decide to bring it to older iPhones via a future iOS update....."
