I started putting vice stocks in my long term portfolio about a year ago of about 33% total and they've outperformed everything I have in the last year. Altria, Molson Coors. They pay good dividends, they outperform in bear markets, they are the ultimate consumer staple long term holdings.

Thanks drew, Coors is very hot at the moment. My 401k was in 2 funds, and I'd like to put the bulk of it in similar units. At the moment I'm looking at FNCMX and FCNTX . The goal is long term growth with capital appreciation. I am totally ignorant of how to judge the worth of a fund. Your comments are more then welcome .

I suggest you wait. I usually post when I think it's a good time to buy and a good time to sell. Although I sold early this time it was a random thought.

Is anyone buying or holding FANG? I bought a little AMZN last week. Up 7% this morning. So far so good.

^that does not sound like very good financial advice. "think" "random thought"

I suggest index funds and that the best time to buy was yesterday. As in you should always be fully invested.

"Time in the market, not timing the market"

My only problem is that index investing on here is often the answer to all questions and seemingly anything that isn't index-based is market timing.

So for example, reacting to a rotation in the market when you're over weighted in a sector because of gains is market timing if it doesn't involve index investing. Seriously, I've seen something close to that on here.

If my 85 year old mom has a significant enough amount of her portfolio in index bond funds, which are typically heavily weighted in Treasuries, then it might make sense to have active management in a rising rate environment. I'm not ripping on index investing here as much as saying that there are defined circumstances where a person's situation, time line, and goals will dictate the appropriate path.

There is such a thing as a stock picker's market in which index funds tend to under perform. If I have a short term goal that's underfunded, it's my hope that I wouldn't be called a "market timer" if I try to incorporate a favorable sector that the market has rotated into for the near to intermediate term. A classic example of this would be health care stocks from 2011-2015.

I like Jack Bogle, and tend to agree with much of what he says, but his quotes aren't the answer to every question or the answer to everyone's circumstance.

Vuflanovsky,

Where else can people invest in large diversified funds with ease and very low costs ?

True, some companies in a fund are dogs, but they are a small percentage of total fund holdings.

I've been looking at funds for several weeks, trying to learn. I know virtually nothing about funds. Last week I made a small purchase of FOCPX.

Bandito440 has a small position in VTI which looks interesting.

Oldmoparguy1, thank you for the invitation.

It's hard to beat the Vanguard Total Stock Market mutual fund and ETF for cheap diversification. My Roth IRA is mostly in the mutual fund version; VTSAX. Regular deposits and reinvested dividends for the next 19 years; that'll help my retirement out nicely.

Good long term plan. Don't forget to get your wife to also contribute the max every year. I always contribute the max the first week of January every year to IRA.

If i was retired, I would be cautious keeping too much money in stocks.

Good advice.

This depends on the individuals circumstances. In my case we are all stocks. I have been retired for several years, my wife is newly retired, we have adequate income, the IRA is a vehicle to pass capital forward to our heirs.
