I'm getting the jump on the competition and opening my "Cash for Gold" franchise. Up $60/oz. today?? Talk about an irrational fear ( and broken ) market...maybe markets will be able to fixate on something other than things like the price of crude before July or August rolls around.

O has performed great.

I got tossed out of more than a few things. Oh well, regroup. Shop. So I don't always have winners. Oil and energy are beating me like a concrete filled rubber hose. There ARE some bargains.

My gold and silver have paid off quite nicely. Sold half my GDX into this mess.

Some banks may be a bargain.

ETB and ETV are still good.

I bought EPR and it's still nicely up.

It was near 70 in August.

Even something like CRAK should be doing OK!

Ok, I have a big decision to make. We will do a rollover of my wife's 401k to her IRA. It's 6 figures and I want to try to do basically the same type of investment we currently have. We currently have 2 funds managed by Prudential Retirement.

North Carolina Large Cap Value Fund, 50% 5yr return is 9% Net Expense Ratio 0.41%

North Carolina Large Cap Index Fund, 50% 5yr return is 10.7% Net Expense Ratio 0.03%

I want to put this money in similar products.

My wife turns 70 this year, so we both will be withdrawing our required distribution next year. Since we have more then enough retirement income for our needs, we want to maintain and/or grow the principal and do the MRD. To do this I will need to generate about $8000 cash/yr.

Of course I will be working closely with our broker, but there are several sharp, experienced investors here who might have some good advice.

TIA

That large cap fund looks better on paper. I'm also wondering what others will say.

OT: I got $20K last year from just Verizon and AT&T in dividends.

Good info.
I'm thinking of a basket of divided paying stocks. Stocks that are solid long term companys that pay 3-5% year after year with some growth. Enough shares to return ~8K/year. The rest in 2-4 funds /indexes.

Younger folks say dividends are not important. I agree younger folks should enroll in DRIP. 30 years with GE and I have a 'few shares' of GE.

If you are older and need income due to necessary RMD, dividends are a good way for steady income. Don't chase high dividends and companies with crazy debt (over leaveraged cash poor MLP / energy). I can post screenshot of my VZ and AT&T divs from last year.

For me it is about dividends with capital preservation. Right now with our 2 IRA's we are getting about $10K/yr in dividends . Now I have to reinvest the cash from the 401k roll over. I want a plan ready to go before I pull the trigger.

I am 78 and have been pulling MRD cash for 8 years. My wife will turn 70 in Oct. so next year she will be need to start doing her MRD's. The good news is that we have enough regular income so that we will not have to dip in to our principal.

A question for everyone, what is your best long term holding? The best by your own definition. I have executed the 401-K rollover I have been planning. I have been collecting data on candidates for long term holdings. Next week I'll be buying suitable ones.
