Internet Speed - Router vs Device?

A few notes on Verizon routers...

There are four basic Verizon FIOS routers...

The old Actiontech silver band router.
These are obsolete, as they do not supports WPA2

The last version of the Actiontech routers had a red band, instead of a silver.
Hence, I call them the red band router.
WPA2 is supported, but they have a max throughput of 300 megabits, and that is burst only, Actual is around 100 megabits.

The third version is the G1100. It looks like a slightly off kilter cube, hence my name "The Monolith" (from 2001, A Space Odyssey)
Throughput maxes out at around 500 burst, and 300 megabits sustained, I think.

The last type is the G3100, a round shaped cone. A mesh router, I have not played much with this one...

If you are renting your router from Verizon, or want to upgrade, look at Goodwill Techworks, Shop Goodwill dot com, or Amazon Refurbished.
Be careful, some are old Frontier routers that have been reflashed to Verizon firmware, avoid those...

Also, remember, that to go above 100 megabits, you need a G1100 or G3100, and a Cat 5/6 cable to the outside.
