I would just dial 911 from my cell. Easier to remmber. I get charged for it on my monthly plan.

I keep a landline and subscribe to 6-mbps ADSL from ATT. Total cost, inc. taxes + fees, is about $42/mo. You didn't mention who your provider is. With ATT, I always call their cust. retention dept., ask for the best deal possible and take notes. If that's not satisfactory, I ask to be elevated to a supervisor as they have authorization to provide even better deals + discounts + credits.

They make it a maze and obscure the rules, thus you have to learn to play the game well to get the best deals.

What's there to remember...Store your local Police Departments phone number in your phone like you would any other number. And tell them your home address when you call.

I spend $100 for xfinity telephone and 85/5 Internet.

I need both landline and Internet of 20/5 to do my job as 100% telecommuter.

I have toyed with dropping voice which saves $45 but my wife has dreadful voice quality on her iPhone 5. Apparently they upgraded the LTE band locally however left the legacy tech cruddy. So iPhone 6 calls sound incredible with something called hd voice Verizon running on LTE infrastructure. However iPhone 5 and most cell sound awful.

BC I can afford it and its worth it to me. You can't take it with you. If you have better places to put your money that give you more enjoyment have at it.
I can afford it too. But since I've canceled cable I've been exposed to probably 50% of the advertising I was exposed to when I did have cable. Huge win. One thing I figured out is that with 30 channels it's easier to figure out nothing is on than with 300 channels. Either way nothing worth watching on most of the time.

Bingo!

The amount of advertising these days is WAAAY too much IMHO. Further, the content and quality of the ads is far below par. Remember when part of the Superbowl experience was seeing great ads? What happened to that??

I remember when cable TV meant NO commercials...period. Remember when Bugs Bunny & Road Runner cartoons used to be played before movies in the theater?

I sometimes feel like The Grinch: "Noise, noise, noise!"

I've recently scrolled through both cable & sat. viewing channels...very low S/N ratio...just junk save for a few channels. I'd never pay for that.

Football, for example, is quite frustrating to watch these days, it's so chopped up with frequent ads. I set my recorder for 4 hours to record a game and it still didn't get the whole game! When I went through and edited out all the ads + half-time (more ads), the game was about 2hrs. 30min.! So 38% of the broadcast time was LIV (low-information-voter) ads.

Beware the marketing/advertising industrial complex! Protect your eyes & ears...especially your kids!

Commercials are so bad these days I'm actually starting to watch soccer. Commercials then 45 minutes of play then commercials then 45 more minutes of play. Football: Kickoff then commercial then 4 plays totaling 12 seconds of actual action then commercial then 6 plays for TD then extra point then commercial then kickoff then commercial... Insane.
