Interesting Valvoline Nextgen article

How about if you dig a hole in your back yard and pour your old oil in it? That's what my folks did back when. That's recycling!

Oil itself doesn't wear out it just gets contaminated. If a company with the means of Valvoline starts using regenerated oil it "might" be something I would put in my engine but not until it's been on the market and has been tried and tested for quite some time.

This environemental garbage is over the top these days. I'm a conservationalist and have no problem with not wasting resources. I just have a BIG problem with being "controlled" and taxed under the "guise" of saving the planet.

If Valvoline can pull it off? I'll buy. But I'll wait a very long time before I do.

I dont know why people are scared of using recycled oil especially once it goes back through the cracker. There is no way possible that recycled oil is going to be dirtier than how oil comes out of the ground in the case of Groups 1-3 that is. Another thing is the recycled oil will also possibly have a mixture of the synthetics as well but this wont be their aim, only to meet the specs, grades etc.

Unfortunately the marketers know that people have a fear or recycled oil despite the virgin mineral oil being millions of years old in its original form. Some bottles even emphasize virgin oil only on their bottles.

Thats what most of us call contaminating the water table. That oil and its carcingens it carries can easly travel down to the water table. Recycling is re using.

Pfffft...Yah Shrooms, I agree. Who give a [censored] about the stupid environment. Who needs this lousy earth and clean air and yada yada yada. I'm with you man, you sound like an intelligent guy

YOU care about the environment that much? SELL your cars. Then bike and walk. Put your money where your mouth is.

The number one "greenhouse gas"? Water vapor.

If the CARB could differentiate between the water vapor that comes out of the exhaust from the evil reciprocating engine and the water vapor that comes out of the clouds, the sea, lakes, ponds and off parking lots after a rainy day...

THEY WOULD, AND THEN THEY WOULD TRY TO REGULATE IT!

why does anything which involves recycled anything automatically devolve into a political discussion, despite the fact that the board supposedly has a policy of "no politics"?

Talk about the oil.

I just don't get all the fuss or worry about recycled oil; it seems to just demonstrate a lack of understanding of lubrication in general. The raw material isn't going to "wear out", it's just going to get dirty and lose additives. Crude oil doesn't have additives and isn't particularly clean...

The biggest advantage--and hurdle--this oil is going to have is perception. Some will buy it just because it's recycled; many more won't touch it because it's recycled. Ultimately, though, I imagine that recycled oil will be mixed with virgin crude without the consumer knowing either way. Personally, I just car about how the oil performs.

I agree. The engine will not destroy or alter the oil molecule. Some of the molecules used in the additive package may bond with other molecules created during the combustion process to form something new, but the oil itself will not change. Sodium and Calcium are high on the reactivity chart. Those two elements in the add pack probably change or get depleated.

I don't see any reason not to use it. It's EVERY bit as good as virgin Valvoline and it's also $2-3 bucks cheaper than regular Valvoline in a five qt. jug. I see a few of us are stuck in the Stone Ages.

Lack of raw materials, most likely. There are 100% re-refined oils available. Again, it's not a matter of it being "that good", it's just oil. Base oils don't lose their lubricity in use, they simply get dirty and lose additives.

One thing I learn form this topic is that there are many BITOGers who cannot read or can't bother to read.

Then there are those who can read but argue with reasons, which I agree with: why don't they make more than 50% rerefined content? why not make it cheaper than more expensive? are the non-rerefined labeled oil also 50% re-refined without the extra cost? What % of re-refined base stock other oil blenders use without telling you?

I'm not concerned about quality, like everyone said it gotta be cleaner than crude oil going into the refinery.

Valvoline Website has a nice rebate on this oil - $7 on NextGen, and $10 on NextGen Maxlife 5 qt jugs (or 5 qts). I will be buying some at this price.

Thank you. I think these boards are poorly moderated and threads like these demonstrate the need for more oversight.

Why, of course! WE ALL NEED more oversight, more regulation, more monitoring...

Isn't that usually the problem? We just don't have ENOUGH of other people telling us what to USE (like oil), what to write, what to thinks, most of all what's RIGHT (in their opinion, of course...)!

Oh, well... All's well that Oils well!

No one's telling you what to write, think, or what oil to buy. I'm suggesting you should consider following the board's rules, you know, the one's to which you agreed when you signed up for the forum.

As far as "more oversight", well, take a look at the "VW Oil Prices thread: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/omg-vw-oil-prices.144425/

The thread certainly has nothing to do with oil...

It would be nice if people would simply respect the rules of the forum, and oversight wouldn't be needed. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case.

All I have to say is that I dont see a problem with any recycled and re refined motor oils. At my work and I have been there almost 4 yrs now, we use Safety Kleen 5w30 oils and never had a lubrication problem with their oils at all. The CHAMP LABS filters on the other hand; have had 4 engines blow up from filters leaking at the seams.

Same here.

Going for the Maxlife 5w30. Got an 01 Taurus with leaky valve stems that burns through about 3/8qt per 500mi. With the rebate, it would be stupid for me to not use this next OCI.

If it becomes impossible to carry on a discussion about motor oil without politics being dragged into it, yes.

Unfortunately, some people perceive that ANYTHING said that is in the least bit opposed to their almost religious (GASP!) devotion to the ultra-liberal, so-called "green", erection-to-resurection program of control, taxation & regulations-based agenda as somehow being "POLITICAL"... And a violation of their "special rights" to be unchallenged.

Almost like ignoring the difference between Freedom OF Religion vs. Freedom FROM Religion.

Discusions of Democrats & Republicans and Independants are "POLITICAL".

Governmental regulations, taxation, spending, the Economy, etc. just ain't "POLITICAL"!

At least IMHO. They are not "religious", or "racist", or "sexist", either.

Cheers!
