Interesting observations on Fram CQ filters

Fram is keeping the separate CQ blue 84356/85356 and red R84356/R85356 filters. AAP stocks both reds, and the blues are coming soon.

84356 corresponds to Wix 57356, and
85356 corresponds to Wix 51356

Only Wix made two separate filters for those applications; their baseplates are slightly different.

Fram and Purolator only make one filter for that type (7317 and 14610, respectively), and that applies to all the filters they make for other companies (eg. M1-110, Bosch 3323, etc).

Also, at AAP, the red R85315 actually costs *more* than the blue 85315. This corresponds to Wix 51315, Fram 8316, and Purolator 25230.

We don't have Car Quests in this province, but I do note that with the Wix. That may also happen with their versions of the 51358 (base plate the same as the 57356) and the 51365 (base plate the same as the 51356). Maybe CQ might keep those two separate, as well.

Where do you get Wix filters from?

Some time ago Wix specifically changed their baseplate design/geometry to the 57356 superseding the 51356 for use in Hondas and other vehicles. They felt it necessary to get better attachment to the engine block in those makes/models. They kept the 51356 for other use, many OPE iirc.

Curious that Champ/Fram chose to keep it the same. Wonder what the difference is between the two in their design.

Usually, I get them from a place called Albert North Auto and Agro, an Auto Parts Plus store.

sayac: The same goes with Hastings when I use them. They don't have any dedicated separate line like Wix does. But, Wix told me what you said, something about better attachment to the block.
