Walked into a gas station with the intent of getting gas, snacks and some change

Got about $10 worth of snacks, fountain drinks with the intent to pay and told the cashier I wanted $60 on pump #14 and my change from my $100.00 bill after paying for the snacks. Would have been Around $30 in change.

She said she can only take the exact change or debit. I told her that $100 bill is all I have. She then said she could take debit.

Ida paid with debit if I had any $$$ in the bank.

I then said well do you want me to pour the soda out,put the hot dog back on the roller etc. she said no I had to pay for those as I had already filled the cup and put the hot dog on a plate. I told her all I had was that $100, and she countered with the debit thing again. Even pointed to an ATM.

But a few seconds before she said exact change only. I told her I can't use the ATM.

I offered again to put things back. She said I had to pay for the hot dog and fountain drink.

I saw this was going no where fast so I walked off. She was saying something as I left empty handed. Probably put my pic on the wall or something. It's not like I stole stuff. I left it on the counter and had full intentions of paying for it, but it was the business that refused legal tender... Not me.

Thoughts.

The red is where I work. The green is the gas station

Sadly, I am seeing this more and more often and 100% agree NOT your fault. (I am trying very hard here to confirm with BITOG COC with my language here...)

Not only convenience stations, also: coffee kiosk at airport, ice cream stand, [overpriced] franchise barber shop.

Think the owners are too lazy to keep change, make deposits and/or do not trust their employees and it's actually against the law. But they must be greasing enough palms, no-one cares enough to challenge it.

It's not like you left the store with something you didn't pay for. But... was this the first time in this store??

That's ridiculous, I would have gone Karen. Had something similar happen a few years ago trying to return a rental car before a flight in Portland. It's illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon, so I pull up and they ask how much gas I want.

Me - Fill it up
Attendant - How much gas do you want?
Me - It's a rental car I need to return it full, fill it up.
A - I need to know how much gas you want?
Me - As much as it takes to fill the tank completely!
A - I need a dollar amount.

That was the end of my patience and I left.
