interesting experience at fuel/convenience station

It came from the bank so I assume it's real. Wife wanted to cash last weeks paycheck vs me depositing it.... She does weird stuff and does not trust banks in today's world.
Most banks do not check for counterfeit's either. They don't want to be holding the bag (they would be obligated to turn it in, no compensation). Another dirty little secret of our banking system.

Retailers not taking cash are just being lazy - they don't want to handle it. I won't shed a tear when they go under. Maybe they could invest in one of these.

Many government agencies don’t accept cash, which unlike private business, they have to.

Just small steps towards the digital currency.
There is no federal law that governments (local, state or federal) must accept cash. The writing "for all debts public and private" is a lie.

The entire fiat currency thing is a giant ruse.

Still, independent retailers that don't accept cash are simply choosing to make less money. One of the problems with franchise - any idiot can get one. I have yet to find a family run business that won't take cash.

Of course, the OP did 'nothing' wrong.

When I was younger (1960's), my family was at my uncle's cabin.
We went to a small hardware store.
At the checkout, they had a basket string / pulley system for the money to travel to an 'upper' office.
That person made your change, and it came back down to the cashier.

More fun math.

The $10 of junk food had to be at least 50% gross margin - so that is $5.

Gas is typically marked up 10 to 15% from cost. I know they tell you 3%, but that is after all expenses, like the fixed cost of the station. So their incremental profit from that would have been at least $6.

So they gave up $11 gross profit minimum by refusing the money. Good. Stupid is supposed to hurt.

Several years ago, I was at a .... large retailer.
The cashier in the landscaping dept gave me too much change back.
I told her .... and she recounted.
I went home a few dollars richer that day.
Yes, been there also - for a very small amount though. Handed change - handed it back "you gave me too much". Math challenged again - no and she gave it back. I think it was like under $5. I hate to do that - some places try to take it from the employee when the till is short. But at some point you have to stop arguing.

How do you pay monthly bills with no money in the bank ? Cell phone etc .
My wife is 100% convinced that our banking system is going to fail very soon. Her mother is exactly the same .She kept this months pay check out and has it in a safe at home. I can always deposit a few $$$ to cover a bill. Ya she gets weird ideas.... If it's on the Internet it has to be true .

There is no reasoning with her.

Ok

Don’t some gas stations in the US already have a different price for gas if paying cash vs paying credit?
Some stations here in NJ charge $0.10 per gallon less if you pay cash. When we get take out from a local diner, there are two prices on the receipt; one for cash and a higher one for credit.

So you would have gotten $30.00 back in change?
You were perfectly reasonable in offering a C-note since your purchase would have eaten up most of it.
Seems a little strange to me for a business to turn down a cash sale.

sometimes I wonder if you should get a discount for paying with cash.
Some stations in my little corner of the world do, but not all. At least not yet.

Worse, IMO, there is one station that dinged me for the higher price for using *their* gift card. The credit card upcharge I can understand, or even if it was one of those Visa/Mastercard gift cards, but the card is issued from the oil company that owns the station and can only be used at their stations. Makes no sense, and I don't have the time or interest to find out why, so I don't stop there anymore.
