interesting experience at fuel/convenience station

Walked into a gas station with the intent of getting gas, snacks and some change

Got about $10 worth of snacks, fountain drink etc

Went to pay and told the cashier I wanted $60 on pump #14 and my change from my $100.00 bill after paying for the snacks. Would have been Around $30 in change.

She said she can only take the exact change or debit. I told her that $100 bill is all I have. She then said she could take debit.

Ida paid with debit if I had any $$$ in the bank.

I then said well do you want me to pour the soda out,put the hot dog back on the roller etc. she said no I had to pay for those as I had already filled the cup and put the hot dog on a plate. I told her all I had was that $100, and she countered with the debit thing again. Even pointed to an ATM.

But a few seconds before she said exact change only. I told her I can't use the ATM.

I offered again to put things back. She said I had to pay for the hot dog and fountain drink.

I saw this was going no where fast so I walked off. She was saying something as I left empty handed. Probably put my pic on the wall or something. It's not like I stole stuff. I left it on the counter and had full intentions of paying for it, but it was the business that refused legal tender... Not me.

Thoughts.
Yes it is clearly YOUR fault.

The cashier likely cant count back the change, and therefore you giving money to them is putting them in a position whereas they might need to pull out the stress card, and maybe sue for educational discrimination......or making them work to hard.

So yes your fault. Way of the world these days.

I would have taken the drink.

had that happen to me at a dollar store, bought $30 worth of items, handed the cashier a $50 , she said they didn't have change and most everyone uses credit or debit cards, maybe most everyone uses them but i prefer cash , so i left the stuff there and drove down the road to a Sheetz and had no problem.. i started thinking maybe she didn't know how to make change??

You weren't wrong. I guess neither was she technically, but she was quite rude. Retailers are not obligated to take cash, but there stupid not to. They should at least have big sign on the door walking in. Many people are soon not going to have working credit cards (tapped out). Not taking cash just shrinks there potential customer pool.

Retailers are stuck in covid where people were begging them to take their money. Now there going under - Kohls, big lots, Walgreens, Macy's - all closing stores.

Congratulations on saving $10. Bring an apple next time. :)

contact the upper management of the situation and remark that I will never shop there again, and encourage others not to go to the place.
Why? If they hire morons or implement stupid policies they deserve to fail.

But yes, if I owned the place I would want someone to let me know. But of course I would be happy to take Everyone's money. They have easy ways to verify authenticity.

Most convenience stores won't take anything over a $50 to discourage robbery. My guess is that they didn't have much change in the drawer hence the exact change only. Yes they needed to have that posted on the door before you enter.

To put that in perspective, $50 now has the same purchasing power as $20 in 1990. I don't recall any places rejecting $20's in 1990.

They don't want your cash. There too lazy. Take your cash elsewhere, let them fail.

I only carry $20 bills in my wallet and I know most businesses will not take $100 bill.

I use credit card for all gasoline purchases. I don’t like going inside to pay for anything.

I definitely enjoy getting a Benjamin 😃

Management probably told her NOT to accept $100 bill.

Maybe she was just doing as she was told ?

I do understand your $100 bill was authentic.

It came from the bank so I assume it's real. Wife wanted to cash last weeks paycheck vs me depositing it.... She does weird stuff and does not trust banks in today's world.

I see a lot of places today with signs indicating no $50 or $100 bills are accepted. Usually smaller businesses. They just don’t keep a lot of cash on site or in the register. Of course if you’re spending close to that amount of the bill you’re giving them it shouldn’t matter. But I understand if someone attempts to pay with a 100 dollar bill for $8 worth of stuff it puts a strain on their ability to make change later for other customers.

Years ago I had a situation at a small convenient store that switched to cash only and I was not aware that they made this change. I had been there multiple times to get sub sandwiches. Surprisingly they had great subs they made to order. Had the guy make me two big subs and went to pay with my credit card as usual. Nope, cash only now. I had to walk out. Felt bad and the owner was not happy. They quit taking CC as payment. I didn’t know.
