Installed new brakes

After waiting for a break in the weather, I got a chance to install new brakes in my daughters mazda3 as the brakes that were on the car were just too noisy. Noisy, meaning there was always a grinding, or metal to metal noise apon each press of the brake pedal. Really noisy first thing in the morning/evening after the car was sitting for a spell and then quieting down only a smidgen throughout the drive but, noise was alway present.

Often, when the brakes were really wet and sitting a while, there was a LOUD MOAN(ERRRRRTTTTT!) in the brakes until the water was dispursed, often causing a feeling that the car wouldn't stop(usually when backing out of the driveway first thing in the morning). Never caused any issues.

I had already ordered/received the new pad/rotors F&R.
I ordered a whole CENTRIC set up(individualy of course) from R/A.
Centric Premium Rotors with the Black E-Coating F&R
Centric Posi-Quiet Ceramic Pads F&R

They all went together nicely without fuss and I blead the whole system at each wheel, opening the bleeder first while pushing back the caliper piston and then bleeding that wheel/corner, starting the furthest away and getting closer to the master cylinder. One wheel at a time and my back in now killing me.

I lubed everything with PERMATEX Black silicone lube, (sliders, slots where the brakes slid into, backs of the pads). And Never-Seize'd all other bolts and wheel hub where the rotors rest against so the next time brakes/rotors are done again, the removal should be easier. The rear rotors came right off but I had to pound the fronts with a dead blow to get them to break free. Whhhhew!

First impression...Great! From the first stop to the last as I had this car all day/night. We got more rain again throughout the day and into the evening. So the car sat in the rain all day(thunder&lighting).

In the evening, I left my office and headed home. When I first started off from my parking space and headed for the exit of the parking lot, there was no noise from the brakes apon stopping/waiting for traffic. Usually, there is a loud moan/groan and lots of metal to metal noise.
Now, there is just a mild sound of friction; the way brakes are supposed to sound after sitting for hours in the wet. Then they quieted down to nothing. The pedal pressure is the same as it had been, which was very good, and the bite is equal to the semi-met's that I had removed with a very normal, smooth brake feel of assurance.

The pads that I removed still have tons of meat on all of them and the rotors didn't look too bad either. In the junk they will go as I won't even keep them for a few weeks as I sometimes do with others.

Between the previously very loud Dunlop Signature Tires which sounded like wheel bearing noise,(replaced w/ quiet Hankook Optimo H727) and these new Centric brakes, I have now gotten this car as quiet as a mazda3 is going to be without ripping up the carpet and laying down more insulation. It's really a nice car to drive w/nice drivetrain and ride/handling tradeoff.

Cool. I put some rotors on our MDX from Pep Boys with the black coating on the non-wearing surfaces and so far, that stuff really works. No rust and they look as clean as the day I installed them.

Good work!

I just installed Bendix CT-3 ceramics on my Hyundai, and I've noticed the same thing. They don't have a real strong bite when I first leave the house in the morning. But after a few minutes of driving, they stop great.

Yeah, I love the ceramic brakes that I have installed in my other cars. One car came with them and I stayed with ceramic. The other I converted to ceramic and then this Mazda3.

For me, ceramics have taken out all of the things that I didn't like about other friction materials such as noise, rust/dust, inconsistances with braking and outside tempuratures etc. The brakes just always feel the same all of the time when using ceramics.

Yes, in normal driving. But sooner or later at some point you may realize they simply do not have the fade resistance and/or bite of a good semi metallic formula.

That's why we never use them on a road course!

Note that the word 'ceramic' is tremendously overused and has become a marketing buzzword. Many of the so called 'ceramic' formulas are very low actual ceramic content.

I've gone through four different sets/combinations of brake pads on my Avalon and found those Bendix CT-3s to be the best.
Glad to hear you like them too.

I've put on a set of Wagner ThermoQuiets on my friend's 07 Civic and so far, so good. I had the OEM Honda rotors turned and flex-honed, and I lubricated the pad support ledges with Sta-Lube brake lube, the slide pins got Sil-Glyde and the brake fluid was flushed out with DOT4 O'Reilly's house brand.

I had TQs on the family beater and they are noisy and grabby soon after they were installed. Turns out that Ford and Nissan called for semi-metallic pads, which were specified by Motorcraft, Bendix and Monroe. I've gave them another chance on a car that calls for organic pads.

Nthach,

Your good/bad experience with the generally well regarded Wagner ThermoQuiets is a good example of why we all need to be careful regarding the anecdotal evidence we all present here regarding brake recommendations. For a guy who wants a "black or white" answer, I hate these "gray" areas. Thanks for sharing.

Normal driving is what we do. I have driven through all or the mountains of PA, down into VA, through the Carolina's and proceded on to FL without any fading issues "comming down the mountains". Even in the hot summer(August 120 deg F) of AZ in Phoenix bumper to bumper traffic at 5:00pm, on/off the brakes...Love'em

I'm not trying to compare Ceramic brakes with other brakes that car really withstand some real heat in, "repeated hard stops" but, for normal driving for everyday type vehicles/cars, they're wonderful.

I or othre family members have even had to make that once a year real hard stop because either we or the other person had poor judgement at that minute and the brakes were great. Real close call and the brakes did their job very well.

I don't want this thread to turn into a "my brakes are better than your brakes" conversation. I'm just happy I found what works well for me/us

FWIW, I have Axxis/PBR Metal Master pads on my Lexus - they are basically Australian Bendix Mintex pads without the TitaniuMettalic/Titanium Stripe coating and they work absolutely great especially in traffic or down long descents. However, these pads are semi-metallic and they are a little chatty at times - I lost my Lexus quiet braking but I gained a little more braking performance as well. I've used Bendix, Wagner, Raybestos, Monroe, PBR/Axxis, Textar, and OEM Akebono/Advics pads on various cars with varying results. A good brake pad that is matched to OEM material is best for most drivers. It's when you take a car to the rack or bash on it is when you'll need to test the waters. I still say the whole package - not just friction but the rotors, hardware, lines and fluid are important as well.

Don't worry, it hasn't. I just want everyone in the thread to understand that it is a very platform-dependent situation, and they'll want to be careful just asking for "ceramic" pads!

Just like you said, you found a combo that worked well for you.

Thank You!
I do know what you mean and I value your opinions and topics of discussion. I always look forward to your replys/topics as I do many others here that I hold in high regurad.

Quick update and I don't want to stick my foot in my mouth!
Over the last 4 days, I have been driving this car with the new brakes and they are great! Stopping power and pedal pressure are the same as before, which is to say, very good. The quiet is a nice change.

Oh sure, first thing in the morning after an all night rain there is mild sound of friction when first applying the brakes but, it goes away quickly apon each normal stop. I think my daughter will be very happy.

As I mentioned earlier, with the old brakes, the friction noise(metal to metal sound) never really went away even while driving/braking throughout the day, they just quieted down but, was alway present. And also, when the car sat for a few hours between trips, this would start all over again once underway. She uses her car for her job traveling around the local area daily.

I'm certain the quietness will remain and I really hope these brakes last quite awhile.
