You're going to keep driving it anyway, so why bother finding out?

That may be what MOST people would do (not the fine folks here, though...

), but I would take it to a shop to be checked over before it croaks and leaves my wife stranded out of town or something equally inconvenient (or unsafe).

One of the advantages to the flush machines is that most of them filter the oil going in. So you have no dirt and dust from funnels or whatever. New fluid is not clean.

You don't want to know what goes on in most transmission shops.I know 1st hand the tricks of the trade and how they work.If you find a honest transmission shop(impossble by the way)it will be right next to the honest body shop! LOL

Mostly true. I got lucky and the first place I worked for was extremely honest. Just a small business but there were so many times when a car would get diagnosed by a different shop that it needed a rebuild and it would turn out to be something minor like a solenoid.

On the other hand, I quit Cottman's because some of the things they wanted me to do were just plain criminal. Overall I'm so glad to be away from that field of work.

Hmmm yeah I remember when my tranny would slam into reverse when warm diagnoses from five count 'em five shops was "Needs a rebuild."

My digging on the web showed that I just needed to adjust the bands which I did in 2 hours on my driveway. That saved me close to 2 grand...

Recently I put on a universal drain plug kit in my tranny pan, runs around $3 at auto stores. Now I can easily drain the pan every 15K (tow a lot) and refill without having to drop the pan. Would definitely recommend one to anyone who is about to drop their tranny pan.

I think it needs a rebuilt.

So easy to say, and so much money is made by saying it.

Sometimes it turns out to be true as well.

Debugging a problem can be a hassle. To justify that, most shops will sell the rebuild or swap. This is especially true because most vehicle owners wait until the last minute, torturing their drivetrain, prior to having it looked at.
The """it started acting up last year but wasn't all that bad""" consumer gets *#@$&ing annoying after awhile.

Bigger shops have a 'salesman' who will always try to sell you the new transmission for every issue, even if just a bad plug, sensor, injector......yep, many transmission get rebuilt because the vehicle needs a tuneup. Toss in known issues, like band adjustments, failing solenoids, other electronic problems(TPS, VSS, wiring corrosion), and just about ANYONE having any shift/slip issue will end up being sold a new unit.

IMO, if you wait for the problem to become critical, drive while multiple quarts low on fluids, never perform some basic simple maintenance..... you deserve to get fleeced by the crooked repair shop. What comes around goes around! Neglect/abuse your vehicle and some shop will abuse your Mastercharge.

Couldn't agree more!
